Oil Temperature Gauge on F30 320i not working properly

Is anyone experiencing a problem where the needle when the car is driven for about 30kms goes close to 120 degrees. Mine does this but quickly drops to about 90 not constantly sitting at just below 120. What could be the issue. BMW is so hopless everytime my goes there more problems develop.

Try a different dealer. Also remember that the temp gauge is not a water temp gauge. It is actually an oil temp gauge. If you want to see water temp then you need to get an elm327 or get into the hidden functions on the dash http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=850724

Iceman I know it is not a water gauge. I have driven the car for 2 years and it always remained constant

You mean to tell me I have a super duper cooler that can cool the car from 120 degrees to 90 degrees in less than two minutes. I know how to access the temperature readings of coolant. I am purely talking about oil temperature not how hot the water is. I mean surely the OBD is getting a reading to see whether the engine is hot enough to perform. BTW this all has happened after a new engine, diff and turbo was fitted. They have also left something loose on the rear suspension because it makes a noise everytime I go over a bump or drive on paving.

This was standard on my 320i F30.

It always fluctuated alot.

Any fans going on when the temp drops?

Not that I can hear on you r current 335 I presume it sits still once the car is hot?

Tellme is the Water temp constant while the oil temp is fluctuating? Have they replaced the oil temp sensor yet ?

I never check water temp. Car is back at the dealer this morning as they never put tape on roof beadings and it is causing chassis creaking. I think I isolated the rear rattle to boot lid will see if I am right later.

Back to the topic. I noticed on the loaner 316i f30 that the oil temp gauge drops very slightly when not in motion like one or two ticks that's it. Mine drops from half to quarter like snap snap that did change oil temp sensor well that is what they told me. I asked to see old temp sensor and they made me wait half an hour and told me there were lots of parts changed but did not produce old sensor. This is Auto Bavaria and they supposed to be a better dealership I think not.

The way it should be let's see if they are third time lucky fixing it. Dealers think every guy that takes their cars in are office monkeys and no jack about cars.

So update BMW tells me it is normal for needle to fluctuate as they say when it is low uses less fuel. I think it is hog wash but I am tired of going back.

At least my squeaks and rattles are gone and can feel the new life in my car with new engine diff and turbo.

The difference is negligible, but I suppose every bit counts with these stupid eco mentalists

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I've developed the same issue with my 420i. Was dropped to a dealer for some software updates for unrelated problems, once I've got it back it's behaving exactly as described above.

Tivoli, did you ever manage to get any more information/a fix or have you just left it?
