Oil question

Hi guys,

ok so I've been trying to find the dipstick on my E90 :nonono:

Then I decided to google it hahaha... Looks like the E90 doesn't have a dipstick.

When I turned off my car today there was a image that showed I need oil. Can I just add this at a garage and if so what do I add?

Or do I have to take it to BMW? I want to take in my car anyway to get my brakes checked out coz it is screaming a bit.

Main thing is I don't want to screw up my motorplan.

If you have motorplan just take the car to the dealers.

Next fun thing for today, try and find your water temperature gauge........

I agree with Sank
It should take a couple of minutes for them to top it up while you wait for your car.

As far as I know, oil top ups won't be covered by motorplan. But the oil won't be expensive from the dealer.

BMW never gave me free oil for top-ups...

You will need to add 1ltr of the correct spec oil from BMW (easiest) and expect to pay around R90 or so. Yep, no physical dipstick on the petrol E90's, so you can only check the oil level via the cluster with the electronic dipstick. Wish there was a proper dipstick retro-fit option!

I got my top-ups for free...

Bought a litre top-up from my dealer last week.. was just over 70Rand and they gave me the magnatec professional, which according to them is the replacement for the old SLX they use to use...

You were then pretty lucky since motorplan only covers oil for services and not top-ups. But anyway, as long as it's not a chronic amount of oil being used it's not such a big deal to pay for a litre here and there. Yep, the Magnatec Professional 5W30 in the green bottle replaces the old SLX 5W30 in the gold bottle - costs the same too. Just bought 7 litres (plus an extra litre) for my Wife's car at R62 per litre from the Castrol depo.

Do not go to a petrol station to fill oil, they general do not use the correct oil grade required for the E90 engines.

You can do this yourself. The oil indicator on the onboard computer works in 250ml increments. You can judge be yourself how much oil is needed.

Yep, filling stations won't have the correct oil for your E90! The owner manual states that you may only add 1ltr of oil when it gets to the minimum (add 1ltr) level. I gather to prevent the chance of over-filling. Now if your car is using oil more frequently (some E90's do), then what you could do is wait until it shows 25% oil level and then add 500ml - this should then take the level to the 75% which is safer than over-filling, and also by doing this you are keeping the oil level from getting to minimum (and possibly lower).

But, this is just a tip for those cases where a car is using oil to this extent - if it's using a litre between services maybe once or twice then it's not really necessary to do this.

Also, when you add the 1ltr, the electronic dipstick takes a while to register that you have added oil, so might only show the new level the following morning or after some driving and restarting the engine etc.

Cool :) BMW told me that I can just pop in and they will check it out no trouble :) But going to take the baby in tomorrow morning at 7:30 for a few other things anyway (should have done this a while ago anyway so lol)
