Hi guys,

So my gearbox has a leak.....According to bmw the oil filter pan needs to be replaced. at R4000 for the pan and R700 per lt oil. Also oil feed lines needs new O rings

Since this looks like a common issue due to the pan being made of plastic. Has anyone found a more long term solution. :bangdesk:

I also have a leak on my 320d Gearbox, got a price with BMW JSN on the sump kit - R3200 but didnt ask about the oil. R700p/l is mad

This is what ZF replied to me, as i sent him a picture.

"You will have to replace Sump, Sump Gasket and Sleeve kit. The costs will be between R3 500 and R4 500 depending on the oil quantities you need to top up the gearbox, oil is R185.00 a liter and it could take 10 liters.

Thanks."

Phone imcomex and get the meyle kit. Then get liquimoly oils.
And get an automatic transmission flush.

Okay so heres my question....

I was advised not to do oil change/flush as it could damage the box.
I just need to top up after they change the pan.

So would mixing two different oils mess up anything?

I was going to do the flush one time but having read online as well its not recommended.

Whats your guys take?

So you will then just do the pan with gasket and the filter, and then just top up with the procedure?

Where do you want to do this?

Wonder if BMW will replace the sump without new oil?

Just called ZF, they said if the oil still looks fine and not burnt they will still use the old oil and then just top up with no problem, but if its burnt he says by using that oil one is looking for trouble...

This information i got from BMW. So yes they will replace and top up.

They said flushing the gearbox is not good if it has alot of mileage and hasnt been done before.

Something about the metal flakes on the magnet being upset and it could go into places you dont want it to go.

Im not expert, im just saying what was told to me.

Did anyone enquire about replacing the magnet itself as well? I've heard it can be done and I have been contemplating having it done on the 530d.

It would seem that on modern BMWs doing a gearbox oil change is a no-no especially with higher mileages, unless the 'box has exhibited problems. If it's fine then leave it alone....

Well they say it can cause problems. But you'll have to decide if the benefits outweigh the risks.

So then it will be better just to replace the sump, gasket, filter and sleeve kit and then to use the old oil and then just to top up the fluid that leaked out...

My buddy at BMW told me not to replace the oil on the gearbox unless it’s removed and repairs are done to the box.

Ross Duncan in Midrand also told me not to change the gearbox oil, changing the gearbox oil is not needed.

If you ask a million people you will get a million different answers...I'm personally leaning towards "if it aint broke don't fix it" .Perhaps going all the way and having your gearbox reconned is the best when the car is over 10 years old and giving problems rather than just changing the oil? It is expensive though :(

I'm going with: if a BMW legend like Ross Duncan tells you not to do something to your BMW, take the advice and don't do it.

I'm in two minds re Ross Duncan :sorry:

What would the price of a gearbox recon be like compared to just the service?

I know an E39 auto box is around 54k to replace so anything would be better than that :slow:

if you belive the crap that bmw spits out then prepare yourself for a hefty gearbox repair bill....

change your oil... it turns black with friction material and burn residue, reset adpations using Gt1 or similar and enjoy your car...
