Hi guys,

2004 330d.
Sudden high oil usage. Checked water and it’s full of oil.

Is there a common issue like oil cooler getting damaged and oil seeping to water. Or is this head gasket done.

Advise would be appreciated please.

Cheers Mike.

My car had the same issue and it was the heat exchanger that went,it is a very common fault and really not very expensive to get sorted.

Oil cooler/heat exchanger gasket may be the problem. But you need to check the whole unit to see if it needs to be replaced. Easy diy fix on the e90, not sure about the e46 though.

Good luck.

While your there you better get that cooling system properly flushed at least twice over...

Great thx Schalk was hoping it would be the case.

The part cost me in the region of R1300-1400 from Goldwagen if I remember correctly:thumbs:

Just got quote for R999

That's not bad at all:thumbs: Just make sure that you take the necessary time to flush the system properly and you should be goo to go.

head gasket is good dont worry .

oil cooler on the engine , make sure the new cooler has a new profile gasket
also dont over torque the bolts when refitting , if possible get new bolts from bmw .

flush the water out thrice

and remember these coolers hate water ! when you refill the cooling system you need minimum 50% coolant (anti freeze) .

i did mine a year ago d.i,y
