Oil consumtion...

Hi All,

new to the forum. Found it whiles searching for an answer to a power loss problem which I fortunately could trace to a faulty coil. Problem solved.... I have another question though which seems to elude me...

What could cause oil usage. Slight smoking mostly on pull away when the engine is warm. She uses about half litre every 800-1000 km. I have pulled all the plugs and they are all fine. Not one is more sooty than another none are "wet" The enigine runs well. No issues. she pulls like she should and does nto show any other issues. Other than the coil which is sorted now. She dropped a timing chain at around 46k km which BMW fixed under motorplan. She has just over 100k km now. The oil usage have gone progressively worse over the past 25k or so km. Is there anything other than valve stem seals that could cause this? Maybe a blocked breather? Could a afulty vanos do this? I would like her to run the way she should, ie. without using so much oil... And would thus appreciate any ideas or thoughts... :)

thanks!

what color is the smoke?

blue smoke at take off is an sign of valve guide stem seals that needs replacing.

my buddy once had the same issue with his e90...

lol! sorry guys. completely missed on the car

yes on takeoff when warm/ no smoking when cold. That I can see anyways. Drove a rund trip of around 3500km about a month ago and she used less than two pints on the trip... If that helps with the diagnoses. What would it cost me to get the head lifted and the seals redone?

so it seems it must be the valve stem seals. Def not a DIY job... Who in Pta are would be a relaible/affordable party to take her to? Thinking whiles that is being done might as well check timing chain and tensioner and then also the CCV? Anything else?

Cheers!

if the car used 2 pints (500ml cans I assume) of oil for 3500kms, I am sure you could just live with it? what does the owners handbook say about oil consumption? what is considered normal?

the cost of getting valve stem seals replaced is prohibitive....

Hi Kish. On the open road it used that. In town she uses easily 3 times more with some smoke when pulling away... Just worried it causes some damage down the line. Not sure what damage though...

Yep, I am pretty sure the standard oil usage spec would also be no more than 1 ltr per 1k km - most car makers locally specify this as the oil consumption tolerance. Some even equate it to fuel usage! In my Isuzu bakkie's owner's manual it says 1 ltr of oil per 100 ltrs of diesel consumed is within spec!!!! Fortunately that is NOT the case with mine.
