Just as a matter of interest I'd like to ask the following

What car/s dy you drive
Mileage
What oil do you use

my e36 m3's
217k km and 250k km
oil change every 5000km's total quartz 9000 synthetic
e90 335i
oem castrol magnatec professional 5w30
every 10000km's although intervals are every 25000km's

if you service these M motors regularly they should last min 500000km's IMO
my M's dont use oil between services

The smaller the interval between changes the better.

5000-7000 is perfect

Spiro how long have you been servicing your ///M with normal Edge Sport? I personally lean towards using Edge Professional (TWS re-branded) but I'd like to hear your comments on how ur car has been running.

The ///M purists suggest that normal Edge Sport is not the same as TWS as the oils have different specs.

Edge sport is not the same as TWS. I would only use TWS in my ///M Cars.

Maybe the OP meant Edge sport professional which is as you say TWS rebranded.

2000 E46 318i 175000Kms service every 12 months or between 10 000 to 13000 kms whichever comes first

1999 Opel Corsa 130i 135000kms service every 12 months (between 3000 to 5000kms as the wife doesnt drive much)

I use 5w40 Liqui moly in both of them (used to use shell helix ultra 5w40)

Howzit

Yep Correct, TWS and ES are fully different,

i did some random reading before i started using normal Edge Sport, Basically, 3 Years Going Now

TWS is a Long Life Long Dirt Retention Oil, so if you following 25000km intervals and u have an air filter that allows a lot of dirt\dust through then TWS is for you, problem with that is, for a Short Interval a Decent Grade Oil will Do, if you can use an oil like..

Lots of different Opinions..

Liqui Moly
Mobil 1
Royal Purple
Shell Oil
PETRONAS - Syntium

then whats stopping Castrol, which falls onto the recommended list, but Ohhhh noo... it has to be TWS... @ 220 a Bottle

quick Math..

about R1400.00 for 1 oil Service with TWS + Filter

Vs.

2 x 5L Castrol Edge Sport + Oil Filter. @ R800
Then proceed every x amount of KM's 8000km's or so to just buy a new Filter and 1 5L Oil... for the next 4 services... or as you please...

Bull... with a short interval, you don't need a long retention oil, and the way the M Toasts the oil, shorter interval with decent viscosity is good, sometimes the car is not even driven hard, but with the occasional blasting, and still the oil is good for a change...

one of the guys recently brought he's car to me for an oil change, 6 Bottles of "Edge Professional" after peeling the Sticker of, wow "TWS"...

Big Up's for Marketing....

a Bigger Matter of Opinion.... and this is only an opinion after the reading I've did...

Isn't the VANOS hydraulically controlled using the engine oil? If so, and the engine was setup to use an oil with a certain viscosity and lubricity, then changing the oil would affect performance. I'm going on reading (and discussions with a friend with an e46 ///M who's also a mech engineer), so by no means an expert.

I don't disagree with the economics of using a shorter-life oil. I guess if you could find a cheaper shorter-life oil with the same fluid properties and do what was suggested, that would be fine. Trouble is, I don't think there are many (if any) oils that match the BMW recommended oils. They usually meet some of the spec's, but not all. Just my 2c... :)

Nice thread.

I have also have a e36 m3. About 200000kms now. I'm using TWS. Change every 15000kms. My car is stock other then the fan clutch delete.

With the fan clutch on I run 90degree oil temps when cruising and 100 when "testing" the car. But without it I run 100 this is during both styles of driving.

E36 M3 = Castrol Edge Sport 5w40 (annual change, doesnt do much miles)
E46 M3 = Castrol Professional 10w60 (annual or indicated 12500km, whatever comes first)
