Oil change question

Dealer here in PE just quoted me a whopping 80 bucks including VAT for the filter, so I might as well.

The stealers are usually overpriced with everything. They will probably charge twice as much for the same oil I can buy at an autoshop.
BTW I have a 320i e46 2000 manual model. I think I should make a turn at Masterparts. I have bough some stuff from them before and it was all good quality.

I am afraid you are quite wrong when you say the dealers are overpriced on everything-It is very good practise to first get a price from the dealers then go and see if you can source it cheaper-For a lot of things yes you can get cheaper but many many items are actually cheaper from the Dealers. They do the Oil filter kit cheaper than many places for instance. The
part number 88002157523 is for the value service kit and includes oil filter and pollen filter, you need to ask your dealer how much it is-I know for sure that the value kits are cheaper than any other motor factors here

As for Oil yes it is cheaper to source that elsewhere.................

Ok this is what I got from the dealers (Forsdicks Tygervalley, closest to me)
Oil filter R120 (lesss 10%)
Micro filter (Pollen filter) R220.00
Air Filter R114.57 (less 10%)
Plugs R80 each (ie R480 for six)

Engine oil R91 /litre
Gearbox oil R162.28 /litre
Diff oil R307 /litre
Must haves for me is :
Oil, air filters and plugs (total R714 without discount)
Engine oil, Gearbox oil (total 91*5 + 162.28*3 = 941.84)

So about R1600 for all and prob another K for the mechie.

Next is probably clutch replacement.

Ask your dealer if he will price match the filter with Laigo's dealer :thumb: Oils will be cheaper elsewhere...At least you now know the prices from the stealers and you can go hunt them out cheaper :)

I do not think they will drop from 108 (120 less 10%)
Oil I will def get somewhere else I just need to get the right grades. I think 5W40 for engine, but what for tranny?

see this article for transmission oils-halfway down the page http://www.redlineoil.com/news_article.aspx?id=13 transmission oil is expensive

and another one http://www.olyslager-lubricants.nl/FuchsEurope/Select.asp :thumb:

Dude, according to the second link the tranny takes only 1litre of oil for a manual box. Can that be right?
and here http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2999055&postcount=17, this guy used more than 2 quarts.
I think I will get me 3 litres from BMW.

Big eyeopener:
Just back from the dealers.
Tranny oil cost R62.27 per 100ml that is R622.70 per liter.
All other parts is same price as stated before, except there was no discount.

Oil at Midas (Helix Ultra 5W40) was R339.00. Midas quoted me over R600 for the spark plugs, so dealers are cheaper with this.
Only now I realise that Spark plugs are changed on Inspection II and I think I am due for Inspection I. Damn maybe I can sell them if I do not need it, who says I am still going to own the car when Inspection II is due.

Reply from Liqui Moly :
The gear oil your BMW requires is the 75W80 GL3+ the product code is 4427. The gear oil are packaged in 1ltrs.

Our Liqui Moly distrutors in Cape Town are SOS oil. Their details are as follows:

Contact person: Fawaaz Phillips
Contact number: 021 448 5564
Phisical address: 309 - 311 Lower Main rd
Observatory
Cape Town

So SOS oil in Observatory quotes me R170.09/liter and they say I will only need 1 liter.
Gears are still very sticky until I ride the car hard then i becomes better. When cold reverse gear jumps out occasionally
BMW say I must leave the oil alone. What to do now?

May I inject a level of sanity into this post?

Is it necessary to do an oil service? If the car recieved a proper service when the service indicator lights were reset and all the correct fluids were used it will (under normal driving) last until the service indicator lights indicate a service time. That is what they are for. So unless you have possibly got water in the oil, have a head gasket issue where you have petrol in the oil, the car has stood for a long time (+1 year), overheated the engine or spent exessive periods at high revs with no load... there is no need to do this.

The oil changing from clear to black is not the indicated service interval. with teh correct grade of oils and filters there will be NO advantage to changing oil more frequently than the normal service interval under normal driving conditions (for a BMW:mmm: )

What is classified as normal driving conditions?

My Fiance & My dad drive 1Km to work & back each day, now the car has not even had any chance to warm up.. so its over fuelling, therefore petrol gets into the oil..

but according to the correct oil change intervals, the oil would get old quicker than someone driving 100Km to work & back

That is not considered normal driving conditions...

Normal conditions would be a mixed cycle town and highway, average trip time of over half an hour. Occasional red lining. I believe that the service interval actually minitors your driving style and frequent redlining will drop the service interval?

abnormal driving conditions are the one you mentioned above (but there walking and not frequent oil changes is advised) and anything that could lead to the degradation of the oil. This is most likely to be caused by foriegn liquids (water, petrol, diesel), high revs and high tempratures.

Lucian: How many green lights left on the service indicator?

I have not once changed my oil b4 service is due. That is according to the service indicator. I never had any engine problems. I drive normally and never push the car too hard, just now and then when I need the performance I will push the engine to the red, but that is very seldom.
Nowadays I just use the car for commuting to work, about 15km, so 30kms round trip daily. Sometimes I do some highway driving just to give the engine a good run and then the car drives fine after that.
