Odo meter problem!!!

Hi all,

I have a problem no with my Odo meter. Sometimes it will only pick up when I am doing 70km\h and will drop to zero at 40km\h when I slow down to stop. What can I check to try and fix this. This is also just a intermittent problem, not happening all the time. I have to give some attention to this old lady now, because in the last 3 weeks everything just started falling apart, roof lining, door panels, etc. and now the Odo meter.

Thanks

Gerhard,

I have a spare cluster, Your probably going to find that its the gauge itself thats busy failing. I doubt its the signal being bad, else you would loose it down to zero, or it would pulsate under a dry joint/short..

Do you think I must take it out, solder all the the joints and put it back?

What I found was, when it is cold I have the problem, when it is warm it works fine.

Your knowledge is better than mine.

Thanks

Gerhard.

It could be that, I actually recon that it could be the gauge itself though, as its not really erratic, but a soldering job may work...

Its a bit tricky to remove due to space, what I found best is that there are two nuts under the steering column that actually drops the entire steering col and you can then get the cluster out,

It is possible to remove the cluster with the steering wheel in place, but its seriously tight, and you could break some stuff.

If you remove the steering wheel itself, you will have an airbag light unless you remove the battery, but with the battery removed, it becomes harder to do tests,

If you want, come and visit me and we can look at it together :)

I have changed the ignition last year, so to do that will be fine. I will take it out and solder it and see what happens. Luckly I don't have airbags.

Does anyone know how I can take off that sticky protection layer they sprayed over the soldering on the cluster?

I have done some polishing on the contact points which seems to have sorted the fuel guage but the speedo still don't work when the car is cold only when it's warm.
