ODI - 20 October 2012 (Lets go ?)

I read on the opc club that project shift and the opc club are also hosting an event on the 27 October at ODI, 1km and 1/4 mile. I will be attending that one. Its strange that ODI have their events so close together.

For those going to ODI for the first time, i thought i would take some time to advise you about ODI and what to take along with you...

Firstly, ODI is about 90-100km(IIRC) from JHB Central. The route to ODI is 20% freeway and 80% rural. There are a millions of huge speed bumps along the 80% rural roads. The roads are not bad, but keep your speed down and look at the road carefully. There are some potholes along the way. Becareful for taxi's that drive 20km/h and dont let you pass or that want to overtake you on the rubble while you slow down for bumps/potholes.

The Xcede guys suggested i carry the following, thanks to their advise, i survived the day - Just kidding, its not so bad but best be prepared.

Due to the fact that this place is an open field with a tarred strip, please carry the following:

1. Something for shade while you not in the car - Gazebo or Hat. If you take a Gazebo, make sure its pegged down properly, it tends to get windy and the Gazebo might dissapear or hurt someone. I took a hat as i went alone.

2. Sunblock - Lots of it. As there is no shade, you need some protection from the sun. I didnt take this and ended up a few shades darker than usual. I sat in the car with the aircon on to cool down at some point.

3. Water/Drinks - You will need to hydrate yourself pretty often as you have to wear helmet, long pants and top. I had a tshirt on and used a thin jacket when i was participating. Remember, you in a line of maybe 10-15 cars at a time in the heat so you perspire a lot.

4. ICE - To keep your drinks cool and to cool down the car. It helps wonders...

5. Cooler box to keep 3 and 4 in.

6. Food - They do have a little shop that sells chows, but they do not cater for halaal/kosher/veg.

My advise, get there early. Start your runs early and maybe leave around 3pm. I found that by 2pm, i was drained and just wanted to head home. The heat takes its toll on you there. Plus, adrenalin rush and awesomenes!!!

Use it dont use it...

The most important advise i can give anyone, go and give it your all... You will love it!!

Enjoy
Arbee

@Morne, You had better put some serious mileage on it ASAP. You cannot be doing 1km full throttle runs with less than 1000km's on the clock.

I have just over a month to go. Standing on 337km as of today. Lots of time to get to 1000km and get the first oil change done.

This might a really stupid question but, How does the fuel work? Can you fill up there or do you need to take some?

The nearest filling station is in a town ship. I got a free 1.25 liter Coke last year when I filled my car up at this particular filling station. Or you can just bring your own fuel.

Traction was really crap. Only managed 221km/h with lots of fish tailing on the 1km! Even got wheel spin in 3rd gear.

I think my best 1/4 mile was a 14.8. Left just before it started raining, so don't have the official printed results yet.
