Google "INPA 5.0.2 torrent", get the 326MB one, then goto dealextreme.com and order the blue VAG-com cable and then you need to find installation instructions somewhere on the interwebs.

EDIT: What year car? It will work on the 2001-2003 E39. Not sure of others.

INPA is going to be your best bet in terms of price, and the most versitile before you go to DIS.

Just make sure that your car takes the 16 pin adapter, or if it takes the round 20 pin, you will need a converter as well, but oodles of kits on ebay.

If your car is an E36 or E34, you will most likely need an ADS compatible cable, if you dont plan on using it on the older cars, normal OBDII would be fine

LZ, you should put up in the for sale section.. this type of thing.. Then people just tell you what car its for, you then can see what cables they need & they pay you for the cables & you order them :) That way people will know they getting the correct cables

Should be the 16 pin inside the car, check by the drivers side footwell, or under the dash, its a D-Sub connector.

If you cant find it, look in your engine bay for a round connector about 30cm, it should have 20 pins inside, if so you need the 20 pin converter

I think I am right when I say all E39's were OBDII, so its just the question between 16 and 20 pin

Yup, and FL (2001-2003) E39's have the 16 pin OBDii connector in the car (top of the wallet compartment above your right knee), so the VAG-com cable will work.

Gents, it pretty much is as simple as that.

INPA comes with EDIABAS, which is almost like a client server application, it is this that does the actual comms with the car, and translates the data into INPA, which is just a front end.

INPA is genuine BMW, INPA however was only meant for internal factory use, so its not as "pretty" as DIS, but it works very well, and the information that you get out of it is brilliant, you can also interact with the car.

Example. I suspect that my EGR flap is not working, you can turn it on and off, or I want to activate my aircon flaps cause i suspect one is not working, you can do so.

INPA IS QUICK!!!! An instruction on DIS can take a few minutes to run, but INPA is more or less instant, its fantastic.

There are some issues though, because its "factory software", its not as refined, and often throws out errors, and there is a large list of incompatability between modules, meaning that you will have hours of "fun" trying to get it to do what you want too. I still cannot diagnose my M60 on INPA, the DME 3.3 is listed but it just does not work.

Great for error codes though, and not just error no 12345, it actually gives you a decent description.

It cannot do any coding, for that, there is a tool NCS Expert, but this one is seriously not for the faint hearted, this turns fine BMW's into rather large paperweights if you dont know what your doing.

OK, so which clever fellow in Cape Town has a set up I can come and look at so I can get one of my own? I'll bring plenty of beer or coffee!:):)

I can sort you with an OBD II interface I designed, it's just not very pretty...yet, still busy finalising the packaging and connectors.

was bored, so i thought i would post a little example of how INPA can be implemented for referance..

i have the working version off the net running on a car-pc , using a usb to serial converter, together with a 30$ ebay INPA interface.. brilliant for on the move or home diagnostics
