hi my fellow fanatics.

as some of you might know i hand my car de-catted and a semi free flow was added.

so last night i was driving on the bike behind my wife and saw that the car is smoking. :argh: i know it is suppose to smoke with the new exhaust that might contain some oil. i checked the oil level of the car and all is normal,so i hope this is still the exhaust oil.:yuck:

can anyone please tel me if your car also smoked and for how long. the car hasn't even don 100km since the de-cat.:ty:

please advise.

oil should be out the exhaust after 100km... give it a good hard drive to make sure the exhaust heats up nicely just to make sure

thanks man will do. the car is going to take a trip to middleburg tomorrow if its still smoking after that then i dont know. there is no oil usage and no loss in power. the car also didn't smoke before the decat.

I don't know about the 4 cylinders, but on the 6 cylinder E46's, sometimes the valve cover gasket leaks oil which then falls onto the branches causing some smoke.

When the car is cold, rub your hand along the sides of the engine block to see if there is any oil.

hi,

there is no oil leaks and no oil consumption. i think it's the exhaust. im not worried at the moment but if it still smokes after the trip to middleburg than i'll start to worry.

the question than would be why didn't it smoke before the de-cat

thanks for the heads up bud.

i'll check it when i get back from the middleburg trip. if it's still smoking i'll take it back. i also almost craped myself cause i thought the smoking stopped.

Had Gopher decated and No smoke did 100 000km no smoke. She did start using oil and I was told Valve stem seals......

A de-cat should not affect smoking. You can always tell where the oil(or coolant) is coming from by a couple of checks. You gave us too little information. The main question is WHEN does it smoke?

Does it smoke at startup as well?
Does it only smoke when hot?
Does it smoke on overrun?
Does it smoke on acceleration?
Does it smoke at constant throttle?
Also, does the smoke smell like oil, or does it have a sweet smell to it? (coolant can "smoke" a lot but it will smell sweet)

OK, so let me break it down.
-Smoke on startup means there is oil onside the combustion chamber (head gasket is likely)
-Smoke on overrun is valve stem seals
-Smoke on acceleration is rings
-At constant throttle means oil in the exhaust as the engine would burn it without any smoke at stoichiometric A/F ratio(lambda = 1)

I know in the m10 there is a coolant passage next to the exhaust studs, if a stud is not properly secured, it will smoke. I dont know about yours though.

Jacques

Hi Jacques,

There is no smoke on start up. smokes when it's hot and smokes on acceleration. like i said the car is using no oil and no water/coolant. they said when they fitted the new free flow from the cat box to the last box in the exhaust i might get a little smoke due to the fact that the pipe is treated in oil to prevent rust. in my head this can be the only explanation because the car didn't smoke before the de-cat and free flow.

please advise.

thanks

I don't know what oil they used on the exhaust, but with your engine up to running temp for an hour it should have burnt away. If I were you I would do a compression and leak-down test. It is quite easy and then you know exactly chat the condition of your rings, valves and gasket is. If all is well there, then I wouldn't worry much.

I have always done my compression and leak-down tests myself, but phone around and ask a decent shop what they charge, it shouldn't be much, it can be done in 30min.

But give it a couple of days to stop smoking, it will not damage anything.

Jacques

 Thanx for your advise,

i'll get the tests done. just waiting for the car to get back from it's trip to middleburg. that should sort out all the issue regarding the oil on the pipe. otherwise if the rings are going i'm going to

Hi jy,
het jou post gesien.
Ek dink voor jy ry, maak jou tenk vol, en gooi n blikkie Wynns feul system cleaner in, hier is hoe dit lyk:
http://www.gongchang.com/Wynn_39_s_Fuel_...p12762109/
Dit kos so R45 by Midas, en jy gooi dit in die petrol tenk as hulle volmaak, dan ry jy daai tenk leeg.
Wat dit doen is dit haal al die vuil en vog uit jou feul system uit. Ek gooi dit so elke 25k km's in my kar.

Jammer oor die kar wat nou so rook, hoop als kom reg, en veilig ry.
Cheers.

Guys that are struggling with the afrikaans...
I basically told him to get Wynns Fuel system Cleaner, and fill the tank, before he sets off to Middelburg.
That stuff will get all the water vapour and dirt out his feul system.
