More like VWSA got greedy and mismanaged the brands placement in the SA market, then acted surprised when things never worked out and pulled them out.

The Leon Cupra, for example, was a brilliant vehicle and offered those who might want a GTI a much sportier alternative. Suspension setup was stiffer, visually less boring than the current GTIs or Audi A3s, K04 setup identical to the S3 motor, but FWD. Something VWSA replicated only now with the Edition 35 GTI.
Brilliant buys secondhand, and VWSA are mandated to supply parts and service for the next 6 years at least.
There is still a cult following of the brand locally, despite VWSAs buggery

Seats are awesome !

Reason VW pulled the Seat brand was because VWSA lost on production and export of some locally produced models. Without the export rebates they were receiving, they could not continue to import the Seat models and retain the Seat pricing structure. Financialy it made more sense to pull the brand.

Although the Seat Leon Cupra shared the k04 turbo from the Audi S3, it is not the same motor. Its powerplant has a different model number to that of the S3. Other differences included non aluminium intercooler and different ecu.

The Leon Cupra responds very well to minor mods. I have an xcede dp and exhaust, forge twincooler, hpfp, itg intake, devils own water meth kit, she makes 234 wkw and 460 wnm at KAR amd about the same at wrc. Being fwd with no lsd, traction on launch is a biatch.

I love her to bits.

Here she is :inlove:

From my understanding on the brand, there was major issues alongside the factory issues, at the time the Golf 6 was due to launch, I was fortunate to attend the launch in Cape Town and part of the launch was that of the up-coming 6er GTI at the time and the Director said that over 80% of Golf 5 sales in SA were that of Golf 5 GTI's.

Now lets take the FR and Leon Cupra, the fact that they had more toys, were more fun, looked epic and with the exception of the FR were cheaper to modify to mad levels and still be cheaper than the equivalent Golf GTI, VW had to ship SEAT out or accept that the MK6 would feel the hit.

They chose the MK6.

I have had the pleasure of driving a few mad SEAT's and they are twice as dynamic as any GTI, they are wonderful cars summed up by the SEAT slogan - Auto Emotion.

Sounds like lots of bullpoop. There are loyal consumers to these brands in the UK and there are no such issues.i think the consumer was so used to the Toyota Nissan vw and ford brands dominating for yonks that there may not have been the response to the new brand as was expected.im referring to the sales of the entire range and not just the performance models

As far as I know the SEAT Range, particularly FR and Cupra's were outselling the locally produced GTI's because of their value for money.

But feel free to correct me, there are just as many conspiracy theories for SEAT being pulled as there are for the Twin Towers, Princess Di and the sexual orientation of Justin Bieber.

I like this thread

I also think that the public was "afraid" of the brand. It was like stick to what you know. And people were looking at this thing costing more or less the same as a high spec Polo TDi thinking "what's a seat??"

I'd say the same with MG/Rover that came and went a few times and now back again. But MG/Rover's were just a bit more insanely priced.

All I know is ever since I drove a Cupra TDi about 3 years ago I fell in love with it. The power, the economy, the looks and all the gadgets. :joy:

I once saw a seat pull into a driveway that's at a slight incline. The rear inside wheel lifted of the ground as the front when up the driveway. That's how hard the suspension was.

I also think Seats are more interesting that the Golfs.

Does VW still stock body parts for Seats?

So should you have an accident with a Seat you wouldn't have a problem sourcing parts?

Yes they do. You can order Seat specific accessories etc from a VW parts department. You normally wait 2-3 weeks for delivery.

My Seat is Serviced by VW.
