Noisy viscous

Hey guys the viscous fan on my car has gotten quite noisy, making a rattling sort of sound.

Needs to be sorted as it does not sound good. The fan itself looks fine, can I just change the actual coupling?

Should replacement of the coupling be oem only or would a Meyle part be fine, R1700.00 difference between the 2?

I cannot speak for the quality of the meyle part but I have used an aftermarket viscous clutch before and I would strongly advise against it...the one I fitted only lasted 2 days before it seized up completely. (Followed a couple of days later with a sheered off tensioner bolt)

Also regarding the fan, I would replace it with the viscous. Although their failure seems to be at random it does seem like there is a increased likelihood of failure after the clutch has been replaced. I think the fan from the e46 330d is a good upgrade in terms of strength as the fan has an additional strengthening ring on the tips of the blades.

Diesel electric sell a Sachs viscous for +- R900, my advice would be to purchase it from them as this is what BMW would fit.

Thanks Sankekur and Charly333, for the valuable feedback and advice.

@Sankekur, would the 330d fan be a direct replacement/fit?

@Charly, will contact Diesel electric as BMW are asking 2.5k and did not have stock in any case.

Just check that the fan is not touching the housing before you buy another one, I had the same issue that 2 pieces of double sided tape sorted out quickly,

Paid 2.2k for my 530d's viscous from BMW. Frankly I'd rather pay a bit more and know what I'm fitting. Especially when it comes to the cooling system

When having a look at it, I did not notice that it was touching the housing but will check again to confirm. It sounds like the bearings are making a noise its like a loose clattery sound, not sure if there are bearings in the viscous assembly....

Hear what you saying and do agree, would the sachs part not be the same as the one from bmw though.

Which dealer did you get yours from, I got a price from Auto Bavaria for 2.5k but this was over the phone sure I could push for a bit of a discount. They did not have stock and would need to order in anycase....

I honestly can't say for sure, though generally the viscous clutches either use a 4 bolt or 3 bolt fan, if this is the same between yuo clutch and the 330d fan then it should be a straight fit.

Guess it would best to take the unit of and check.
