Noise on E90 Help please

Hi guys, hope anybody can help me please, as Im searching all over without answers
My E90 320i auto has a strange krrrrrr grinding noise from 20km/h up, over about 80km/h you dont hear it anymore.
The sound doesnt change when the gearbox shift gears, its like the tone of the sound change with the turning of the wheels, it also doesnt change when I shift it into neutral.
When I decellerate, its even harder, but gets down in tone the slower you go.
For a fracture of a second when I take my foot of the accelerator, the noise is quite.
Can anybody please help, as this is driving me crazy, and no mechanic in our small town seem to know whats wrong.
My car has got 101 000km on

Strange! Maybe the belt tensioner??

Hi, thanks for the reply, you won't hear it on n video, its too soft, sometimes louder than other times. I was wondering about the centre bearing.

Hi, thanks for the reply. No, I know the sound of the belt tensioner, also a annoying noise, but its not that. Thanks

Same problem here - have a noise that bugs me but cannot be heard on any vids taken.

Not the pulley, but the tensioner mechanism itself as if deals with vibrations - I think that this might be (small chance) what is happening with my car since I have tried just about everything else already.

Where does the sound travel from? Wheels, engine, back of the car, top, side...?

Hi, def not the engine, if I sit in the driver seat, its sounds like in the middle front or left front or underneath the car, that's why I thought about the centre bearing, but there's no vibration or anything. I had a Masterparts rep, all our town's (4) mechanics in the car, everybody just goes "that's a strange sound" but don't know where it comes from. As I said, decellerating coming to a stop, I shift into neutral, engine at idle speed, still sound the same. its got the same effect than tires 'singing' on smooth tar road. Some people told me its tires, but had 3 different sets of rims and tyres on the car, sound exactly the same

This sounds fimiliar as i have that same grindging noise currently. However i have a manual box.

Let me guess, when you try to hear the noise you cant make out weather its from the front or the rear. Does it should like metallic grinding noise.

If so it could be your Diff.

Hey Stiaan, try having the Centre bearing greased & checked for play/movement in any direction. (If its a sealed type bearing, you cannot grease, must be replaced then)

By your description the centre bearing might be possible candidate of the cause.

Start by diacnosing the simple things first ........ :=):

Thanks guys for all the help, I'm going to get the centre bearing checked out first, might as well get it replaced, R500 from Masterparts.

With my original 16 inch wheels it had exactly the same noise, then I tried my mom's E36 15' wheels, and then I bought new 17' from the agents, and new tyres (not RFT, and not that noisy grooved tyres, marie bisket in the boot lol) The noise stayed exactly the same every time.

Hi,

I am having something similar on my e90 323i. I can hear a soft metallic scraping/grinding/rubbing noise coming from under the center of the car. It sounds similar to tire noise. It is not relative to engine speed and/or wheel speed. I can hear it only when the car is moving and the clutch is out, and can hear it in any gear. If coasting in neutral the sound goes away, when i put it back in gear i can hear the sound again. It's like a metallic scraping/rasp noise. It's not loud but it irritates me. Please help

The only metallic grinding noise I've had on my 323i E90 was when the diff was shot. It will get progressivly louder as time goes on.

I'm having a similar problem with my e90 320i auto, but the noise on mine is only when the cars engine is still cold and I shift into gear. As soon as the engine has warmed up the noise goes away completely. Help.....

I would say its your diff. Put your kar on the lift and drive it in the air and some one can listen underneath. E90's are known for diff noise.

Thanks for you reply. Would you say this is a normal noise for this car? The sound is only there when the car is not under load, goes away when accelerating or going up hill etc. I can live with it if it is considered normal. Thanks again for your response.
