No power at lighter sockets

My CD shuttle doesn't work and I have the original BMW tape radio up front. So I figured my best option would be to get one of those mp3 players with build-in fm transmission. So I got one from Hi-Fi Corp (an El-Cheapo, but whatever), got home and gave it a go. Plugged it in and nothing happened. I then tested it in the 318i and it worked fine. Had a look at the sockets in the 540 and they seem perfectly fine. I also checked the fuse which is also fine as far as I can see.

So now what do I look at or do I need to take it to BMW??

Nic,

How many balls you got left, cause you will owe BMW one after this job.

Any auto electrician will be able to sort it out for you.

Alternatively, just tap in 12v from behind the radio onto the socket and take out the fuse. Not eligant, but it wont take you too long to do.

hehe, I'm just scared of messing up something. The 318i was incredibly simple compared to this car. With the 318 I've hardly ever looked at the user's manual. With the 540 though...

When you say that the fuse "looks" fine what exactly do you mean.

Take it OUT and test, or replace, it may "look" fine but sometimes it isn't. (had that issue before)

Also pop out the lighter socket and check, sometimes the wires get unplugged.

Might be a stupid question, but is your ignition on when you checked ...

@ Carbon M3: It's not the see through fuse. You can only see from above and I did switch it out with the spare fuse. I can't get to the wiring of the front socket, but I did check and test the rear socket. There's simply no power.

@ msm: I tried it with ignition off, ignition on, and even started it. Made no difference.

I will have to take it to an auto electrician.

howzit boet, I also had this problem on numerous occasions with my 5, eveytime I had to take it back to BMW and they sorted it out, I did not ask what was the cause though

I took it the auto electrician to have a quick look and he checked the fuses and said all is well other than there is no power at the sockets. He said I should bring it Saturday morning so they can take a closer look.
