Hi Guys,

My name is Jason and Im planning on purchasing an e46 330d soon. Ive been browsing the forum for tips/things to look for on these cars. So far Ive figured out that I should stay away from the auto models. However I have seen an E46 2005 330d with 5 speed manual transmission. Now is this the 150Kw or 135kW Version? I have checked on realoem.com and the motor is a M57N.

Help Please!

Thanks
Jason

Welcome to the forum

Not that clued up with the diesels, but from what it seems it is best to go for the 6 speed manual ones, and remove the swirl flap as soon as you get the car.

Thanks for the replies guys, well the reason Im interested in this car is because I have a Trade in.

I put in the last 7 digits of the vin no. in realoem and the car comes up as a 2005 model fitted with the M57N - manual transmission, exactly as the dealer advertised. Im just confused as to why its a 5 speed and not 6 speed?

I havent seen the car yet but how would one differentiate between a 150kw model and 135kw model leaving the gearbox out of the equation?

Thanks
Jason

Hi Jason. Welcome. If its a 2005 then it has to be a 150kw version as these were introduced toward the end of 2003, and so was the 6 speed box so I'm not sure why its a 5 speed. Can you post a pic of the engine bay?

maybe the 6 speed gearbox exploded and it was cheaper to put a 5 speed?

A possibility, but that would probably also have required a change of the full clutch and flywheel assembly (if it is anything like the petrol e46 5 and 6 speed) then the prop would also need to be changed as it is shorter for the 6 speed box I think. So it would have made really expensive, probably more so than what a 6 speed box would have cost.

Maybe it just has a 5 speed gearknob on? Crazy I guess but possible

Well I havent viewed this car as yet, Im hoping to go see it by the end of the week. The dealer insists its a 5 speed, Ah well I'll just wait and go see it.

A friend of mine told me that if its a 135kw, then it will have a ASC switch and if its 150Kw then it will have a DSC switch - is this correct?

Thanks for the help.

The 150kw motors came out in 03, so IMO it's a 150kw. Awesome car, buy it, chip it, beat the I's!! :fencelook:
