Morning All,

I'm looking at buying a 2000 528i.
The car's got 175k on the clock.

I spoke with the owner, who swears that the car's in good nick. Says he had a prob with slight loosing of water / getting hot. They replaced the radiator, hoses, etc. Eventually found a small leak on the head. Had the head redone and all's been fine afterwards.

What do you guys recon. Is it a safe buy or should I rather stay away????

What probs can I look out for???

Any info would be greatly appreciated...

Thnx
RPO

If the car still had some sort of warentee from the head job left, you should be safe...

I would just look into who did the head job, and how good they are..

Other then that, an awesome machine right there.

Hi RPO.

Agree with Zaleonardz here - that one is VERY important. BMW's do NOT like getting hot and it could be the catalyst for a host of issues. So ja.. check the head job/guarantee issue ans sommer check the cooling system too. (weakspot)

I would also have the faultcodes checked just also to be sure as this will surely tell you a LOT about the car and about possible gremlins. Let the owner do it it should cost about R200 - R300 at a tech or maybe even free if you lucky! (If the owner is serious about the sell HE should be cool with having this done to "prove" car is all good!:pimp:)

And make sure you get TWO keys and they both work lol!! My only "issue" with my E39 thus far.

E39 is the BEST!!!!! PHOTOS would be cool!!! :excited:

Hi RPO,

I bought a '99 528i about 2 years ago and love it to bits. It is a very smooth, comfortable ride. I also love the E39 shape - it is still a very good looking car - didn't win world's best executive saloon title for a number of years for nothing. I got it with about 145k km's on and have taken it up to about 175k. I have had cooling system issues (see my other thread here) ever since I got it, which it turns out might have been caused by a cylinder head issue all along. If you can be confident that yours has had its head / coolant issues thoroughly worked out, then I would say go for it. General consensus is also to make sure that the water pump is in good condition.

There are some reports of the auto box failing when entering the high mileage zone (160k km's+), but these are sporadic and apparently can be prevented by having a proper fluids service done on the box - contrary to BMW's "lifetime" fluids philosophy. Do be wary of this one, as I believe a replacement box is in the region of R50k.

Performance is surprising when on the freeway, more than adequate for most purposes. The only niggle with my auto is that there is one particular point in the power band where there is a very slight flat spot, usually encountered when filtering in on the freeway (say 60 to 70 km/h). Easily worked around by planting it a half a second or so in advance .

Other minor niggles with the E39 are the seat trim / electrical connectors for the electric seats - these break if not properly cared for. I'm currently shopping around to get mine replaced. Pixels on the console displays can also fade / fail - I'm not sure how readilly available repair services are for these locally, but I think the dash has to come out to get it sorted, so I just live with it.

If it has the standard 16" wheels, the correct 225 tyres are expensive - I paid R8000 for a set of Michelin Primacys for mine recently. It would probably have been cheaper to get alternate 17" mags and appropriate tyres, but at the time I wasn't in a position to shop around.

On my unit, I do encounter a fair amount of body roll when cornering, but I suspect that this is normal for a car of this size + my suspension hasn't had any attention since I got it.

These minor issues are amply compensated for by the comfort and performance you get from the car - the ride inside is whisper quiet until you put your foot down, then you just hear the sweet straight six singing its beautiful music. No wind noise, no outside traffic noise - it still sometimes surprises me.

My fuel consumption is high (currently 13l/100km), but I think this might be due to a combination of mostly enthusiastic city driving and possibly my cylinder head issue.

This car converted me to a BMW fan and I'm currently shopping around for a slightly newer model, as you just get so much more car for your money than anything else out there. Since it is not quite so popular as the 3 series, good bargains can often be had.

Good luck with your purchase, hope this info is useful!

Hi All,

Thanks a mill for replying so quickly & for all your input. Thanks to 528iE39 for your detailed info.

I ended up buying the car. Picked it up yesterday. Took it out for a 100km run on the road. IT DRIVES LIKE A DREAM !!!

Just amazing. Power, comfort & o so quiet... I kept looking down at the revs to check if the motor's actually running.

I've got 1 minor prob with the car though... Too much electronics, goodies & gadgets... It's actually scary.

I did notice that the fuel gauge is giving inaccurate readings. One time it showed half, the next time (after switching the car off) it showed reserve, and this morning it showed ¾ full. After being at the mall, I got in and it was back to half... ???
Other than that I haven’t noticed anything else.

From what I could see, the car’s never been in an accident, which is always good.

Talking about changing the automatic gearbox fluid, must I get BMW to do it??? I believe in changing ALL oils on a regular basis, including gearbox & diff. I did my Nissan Maxima auto because everyone also said: “Ooo, don’t ever buy a Maxima... The gearbox always gives problems and it’s going to cost a fortune...”
I changed the oil with Castrol Transmax Z (OK, it cost me quite a bit at R100 / 500ml), but it was worth the money. Since then that Maxima drove so much better. I’m sure it had better torque after that change. 50k later I changed it again (had to do the CV boots) and not a day’s problem ever...
Soooo, shall I risk it and change the 528’s gearbox oil with Transmax Z or do I take it to BMW and pay through my nose???

I’m glad you guys started this forum. It’s good to know & hear from guys who’ve also got similar interests and who can give some advice.

Thanks guys, and safe travels.
Cheers

Gratz on the new purchase man... glad your enjoying her.

They are awesome cars...

As for the gearbox oil, just get it done. Dennis at Gearbox Den in randburg does an ok job, some of the guys have used him. Or you can just do it yourself, its not too hard.

As for the oils used, yep, not cheap at all, there are alternatives and compatability oils to the original specced oil, but I dont know enough on your box to comment off o f that, but some realistic searching will bring ya to the answer.

Now how bout some pics :)
