New to 440i car feeling a bit sluggish

Howsit gents,

Just picked up a pre owned 440i yesterday and was a bit underwhelmed with the performance.. It's stock so no mperf exhaust fitted and feels for lack of a bettee word a bit sluggish in comparison to a 340i I test drove earlier in the week.. The 340i did have mperf exhaust though..

What I Wana is do bmw have different factory tune options for these cars, like if you have mperf backbox can they load a slightly different stock calibrated file to take advantage of that?

Eish prob a very newbie question but I'm old now don't have time to go and investigate all the forums for answers, any help welcome

Maybe the 340i had MPPK (M Performance Power Kit). There is a noticeable power bump from this.

That said, the butt-dyno also tends to be affected by the sound output of the exhaust so might just be that as well LOL

This sir, is indeed an accurate answer.. I've actually done a bit of reading and it makes sense.. That 340i was breaking traction with 3 chunky adults in the car for the test drive. I knew it had the mperf backbox but I thought that was kit.. I know know that mppsk adds backbox dp + tune.. So effectively its like a full exhaust and stage 1, haha..

I don't feel so bad anymore..

How much to bmw mzansi charge for this mppsk on the b58s.. Just out if cutiosity. I'm guessing in 30k region since back box alone is 18k

The MPPSK on my 440 was a R57k add-on when I bought it 3 months ago. The carbon fiber exhaust tips were like 4k each if memory serves.

Also, they give you an installation certificate that suggests you use 97RON fuel, but then later will want to have the car back to adjust it for the “low quality” of fuel in SA. Maybe have them do that tuning at the same time if you can and save yourself a trip.

Where will the average person get 97 RON fuel from?

Dunno. Would be great if they told you about the requirement beforehand. Even though it’s supposedly now been tuned to detect potential detonation I still use octane booster.

Side-note, after reading about the 97 RON requirement and adding octane booster I get more pops and crackles from the exhaust.

Scratch that, it’s actually 98 RON. View attachment 7

Thanks for your input, just out of interest are you in the joburg area.. Would like to get a feel for the with the mppsk on it.. Just for sake of it coz I know there's no way I'm paying 57k :dunnoanymore:..

Will wait for plan to be done and then dive into the other realm of tuning.. I will be asking lots of dumb questions here even tho I know most of the answers.. It's still the point of the forum I hope. Please dont crucify me guys :ty:

The m performance exhaust only adds a few kilowatts, but it does make a huge difference to the acoustic experience when driving the car. You would get far more power by doing a downpipe but that would void your motorplan if it gets detected.

Just to confirm.. Does the mppsk come with dp aswell or just the backbox and software update?

There is no motorplan approved solution that will offer you a downpipe. The mppsk will often include additional cooling benefits such as either an auxillary fan then software and an axle back backbox should be optional

I would let BMW know that the car is feeling underpowered though. Let them have that on record IN CASE there is something down the line that may happen to the car.
Send it in, let them check it out, re-flash the SW and see what happens from there.

Congrats on the 440i and many happy miles mate!

The M Performance back box wont add any power. As for the MMPK vs standard, the results are not conclusive. My 340i, just with the back box, made more power the a 440 with the kit. One the same day, there was another 440i with the kit, that made about 10-12 wkw more than mine. Overall most B58's make in region of 240 to 260 wkw standard. In my opinion, the MMPK is just not worth it. I would wait for the MP to lapse and do a proper DP and SW which should take you close to 300wkw and a S55.

Have Mppk on my 440i & am satisfied ..
Makes +- 265wkw ..
Yes aftermarket SW & DP will make more if u wana go that route.

Car has trapped 242 on 1km & 12.7s 1/4m @ Odi
&
12.8s @ S2S ..
These cars def need Octane/98 for full performace.
Octane added +- 7wkw on Insane dyno

Tested with buds stock 340i on highway & it was huge gaps ..

Im on my 3rd 440i ( don't like new nose shape) & its a veri nice daily drive , personally prefered it over my F80 M3 **

Pm me if u need any advice/info ..

Hey gents, sorry for the bad news, I opted to pull out of the deal.. There were too many quirks that I wasn't comfortable with.. Hopefully I will find a nice 340i somewhere along the path..

Ok so another twist in this tale, dealer mentioned that he had the aircon radiator fixed and that he will have the "tapping" noise thats coming from the engine/turbo looked at.

Does anyone in the jhb area have a stock 440i that I can perhaps meet up with to get a feel for what the car needs to feel like. The 340i with mppsk is not really a fair gage imo..

Please anyone.. Would appreciate.
