New radiator but leaking 3 months later

Hi all,

So the radiator was replaced end of May. I had the vehicle at Ross Duncan to check a few things and the coolant low warning keeps coming up requiring me to top up. Thought it may be pump related.

They did a pressure test and found it is leaking on the bottom corner on the seal. Had to remove the intercooler to see it properly.

Surely a radiator shouldn’t be going after 3 half months?

I did try contacting the guy directly asking about the warranty. Eventually contacted the dealer this morning who outsourced the job. He is trying to get hold of the third party he used too.

I just find it strange that a radiator would have gone so quickly without explanation.

That BS man, radiator is easy to fit. Get on their case, and most auto parts have a 1 year warranty. I would make some noise if I where you.

Will be dripping the car off on Monday for them to claim the warranty on the part at BMW. That is at least sorted.

Just concerned now that something caused the radiator to go early and wasn’t just a defect.

Having a chat with some peeps today and my radiator issue came up. Someone who didn’t even know my car is a 335 commented that I should get my thermostat replaced as it could be not functioning properly which in turn could be the reason why the radiator could have gone as the coolant got too hot and pressure built up.

Anyone have some knowledge of this and the merits behind the logic?

Doesn’t quite make sense to me for two reasons.

1. Surely something else would have gone first like the expansion tank.
2. MHD logs seemed to show that car was running around 100 degrees when fully warmed up. Tapped 106 once whilst stuck in traffic during on of the recent hot days. This says to me the thermostat was reading the coolant temp thus is working.

I have heard that on the automatic transmission cars , that little black thermostat that fits inside the expansion tank at the bottom , that controls the coolant to the gearbox , when that gets stuck it causes pressure in the expansion tank , causing the tank to crack .

Its good to inspect that part as it gets brittle with heat over time and sort of destroys itself .

Thanks for this bit of info. Will definitely check it out when I get the car back.

I am actually considering getting thermostat stat replaced but if there are more, like the expansion tank one you mentioned, then I might as well do those as well.

Got it back. Seems a top pipe connecting was actually the issue. It dripped onto that area in the pic somehow and that made it looks as if the coolant was coming from there.

Will see how it goes.
