Your job should not be to buy a 1.5M car and then spend another 100 or 200K fixing it.
The current 5 remains 'good' if still a bit anonymous because it is a hybrid of the old F-series and the new G-series (certainly far better on the interiors). To some degree the F10 had design cues from the old E-series (certainly if you look at the tail lights, less angular front etc) coupled with F-series improvements and game changing on the power front. I am very biased here of course, but I feel like the F10 has aged well and will not date badly. Even next to the F90 it is not one of those situations where you immediately feel like you need to switch.
I find it VERY hard to justify spending R2M for an F90 (although the M8 pricing makes this look like a bit of a bargain) BUT at the prices they are now coming down to (R1.2-1.4M range) they are amazing value. I know there are owners who will agree or disagree on this, but the F90 feels so different to the F10 that you could justify having both for the right price (assuming you already have a paid-off F10). The somewhat muscle car character is lost in the precision/clinical execution of the F90.
The 1 is an absolute disgrace - in whatever form you choose it - IMHO.
The 3 is very good if you spend a LOT of money kitting it out (all the good looking ones are 750K+ with many cosmetic boxes ticked.). We have a W205 facelift Merc at home and as much as it made the F30 look prehistoric, the G20 puts it to shame! Totally outclassed on space, tech, finishes, infotainment, quality etc. Pricing on the upper models though is astronomical and totally unjustified... despite the leaps in interior and infotainment. Why would you buy an M340i (xdrive and all) if you could buy an AWD M5 very lightly used (20000km odd) for R1.3M? There was a much bigger differentiation between the 3 and 5 in the F-series generation both in terms of pricing and size/styling.
BMW on the 6 vs 8 - they are really trying to see how far they can push marketing (as they have destroyed M to the degree that the 'most powerful letter in the world' now means nothing if not paired with "Competition" or "CS" or "GTS" or "DTM" etc). Wait until CSL is resurrected & destroyed too (this one is coming). The 8 is just the replacement of the 6. What is different vs. the previous 6 series in terms of concept? It is an M5 powertrain, widened and with 2 doors. Ditto Gran Coupe... just this time because they call it the 8 and pretend it is a totally different concept, they feel like they can charge R1.1M more instead of R200-300K more that it cost last generation.
There really are only 4 BMWs I would like to buy and none of them have that god-awful grill: M5C (This I will buy at some point), M8C (Maybe if it dips below R1.5M in the next couple of years), X5M (unlikely I would buy it, but I like it) and M2C (doesn't make sense if you have another M F-series already).
