Hi guys,

so finally decided to join this forum, flame suit on, but I'm a VW nut by heart:tiptoe: and don't think that will ever completely change. Having owned a list of VW's not that you guys would care :=):

With all that being said I've always had a desire to own a BMW of some sort, the very first car I was taught to drive on was my dad's 88 E30 318i which was a minter, but for some reason I always gravitated towards his MK3 GTi. Clutch on the E30 was too stiff for my liking as a learner. My cousin way back always took me out in his E36 328i when I was in my early teens and damn that car made me crazy, quite low and pretty quick at the same time his dad owned an immaculate E30 325is since then I've been an undercover Beemer lover.

Now that we past my boring intro, I'm currently driving a '14 6R Polo 1.4 with a few extras and a '86 MK2 Jetta which is my little project which is also used for daily commute time and again. Daily commute is a round trip of 60km max.

Now to my question I'm considering a E90 320d preferably with low-ish mileage and M-Pack. Diesel because I want something that returns good fuel figures, I know I can't compare the 2 but the polo averages about 6.5l/100km - 7.0l/100km in traffic and have seen it drop to as low as 4.5 on the highway, obviously that is nursing it but usually around the 5.5 mark. The 49L tanks gives me 780km's. Also, main factor we need a bigger car. Pram in the boot, car seat in the backseat + groceries :blueCry:

I've always had this fear of turbo cars breaking...don't know why it's just always in the back of my head. Not a fan of auto boxes either. Yesterday my wife and I went out looking to get an idea what we should expect, only came across one 320d rest were all 320 323 325.

So what should I be aware of with the 320d, how is maintenance and running cost, etc a facelift with decent mileage would be a plus. However in a perfect world with me not caring about consumption I'd go 330i then my POS Jetta would have to step up as my daily drive and 330i for Friday-Sunday.

Soooo help would be appreciated in my 320d vs 330i dilemma.

I tried the search function but nothing generated.

Your help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, welcome,
Comparing a 320d to a 330i is like comparing ur polo to a gti,
Wont be too fair,
The idea is to consider what u want, pure power, or reasonable power with excellent fuel consumption,
Now let me add that the e90 320d turbos are very strong, probably the strongest in all the series prior,
Also let me add that with software and downpipe the power will be abt 30kw less then a 330i and u still get good consumption,
Lastly u can see that my choice would be a 320d all the way,

Now if u really want to have fun, e90 330d lci, consumption is not bad, less then a 330i, power matches a 330i,
:YesNo:

Welcome fellow noob!

Add the 330d to your shopping list, or at least just try one. You won't be disappointed!
I am on my 3rd 3.0d and would do it again in a heartbeat.
Only problem I ever had was the old GM autobox on my E46 failed. They were a known weak point. By no means the motor's fault.
Total about 130-000km so far (in 3 cars) without a turbo problem!

Good luck in your quest and do post pics when you find her!!

Your ANSWER is simple 330d

You getting power close to 330i....consumption closer to 320d

Welcome to the forum....

Thanks for the response guys!

Funny enough a buddy of mine sold his E90 325i Sportpack and got an E90 320d. Took it for a drive on Sunday. Very impressed I was, definitely leaning towards that. However his appeared to be very basic and was a non Sportpack. But the drive and power delivery was tops.

Also, which aftermarket plan would you guys recommend in the event something like the turbo decides to pop. I've never owned a turbo car, just need some reasurrance that the car will be taken care of if something does happen.

Once again thanks.:=):
