If I am not mistaken the E46 320i was actually a 2.2L, I know it was initially (I think :rollsmile
and it was around the 120kw mark, but I may be wrong. If there is one thing you will never get used to,it's the sound of a straight 6,there is nothing to beat it,especially coming from a BMW. The 318 wasn't that bad a car, just very underpowered here on the reef. It was only doing slightly over 100kw on the flywheel, and that with a relatively heavy body meant the power to weight ratio wasn't so cool. I would definitely start with a 320i though,those cars really are bullet proof. But it also depends what your price range is,you could conceivably go as high as an E46 330i, just remember though, the higher in the model range you go, the more costly they become to maintain.

im looking around 65k -70k .. is what i can mostly afford. at the moment 318 is in that price range. i have found 320i here and there but mostly the 318i. I absolutely agree there is no sound better than straight 6 from a bmw. I will have to keep looking and checking round. But i am intreseted in a 320i. sounds alot more promising to go for

I wouldn't get rid of that civic for a 318i.
320i/323i/325i, but then you must be prepared to fork out for the fuel bills.

You could get a decent 320i in that price range... hell,I've even seen the odd E90 320i for about that! I kid you not! The 318i had a 2.0L 4 cylinder motor in it, similar to the one used in the E90 320i, but the 320i had a decent engine in it cos it was still 6 cylinder. Fuel is relative. On my M3 I am getting between 420 and 450km's on a tank, and that's with the aircon on and some hard acceleration thrown in here and there. But I'm too old for racing anyway...lol. Seriously look at the 320i, you won't regret it, even if you pay in a couple extra thousand.

Hondas are generally very reliable. I know of a stock honda that reached 500k without the motor being opened.
My dad had a e46 318i. Fuel consumption was very good. about 650kms per tank at the coast. It didnt seem underpowered at all. Window mechanisms failed a few times. Started giving troubles around 280kms. Water bottle cracked twice. Radiator fan went. MAF sensor gave up. Picked up a bearing knock around 360k. Dad patched her up and traded it in. Think they gave him around 40 for it.

I find it strange that people can say the E46 318i has the same if not worse consumption than the 6 cylinder E46's.
The 318i is much more frugal than the others. I drove a 318i for more than 3 years and currently have an E46 325i, there is also an E46 328i as well as an E46 330i in the family. All three 6 cylinder use around 10.5-11.5l per 100km where my 318i was never more than 9.5 no matter what you did with the accelerator.
If you drive the 6 cylinders hard they use fuel like it is free. If you get more than 11l/100km with the 318i you need to learn how to drive.
This being said I would not sell the Honda for a 318i. A 330i yes.

My best consumption was 7.9L/100 and i wasnt even trying.
I agree that the 318i/ti are kak slow but it beats all the jap cars and comfort and safty for the money you spend.
Iv had my car for 1 year and 4 months.
Issues iv had .
Battery (replaced)
Crank sensor (replaced under warranty)
No other issues.

Yea sorry guys !! im gana hold out for another year then i will look at the 320i..
i am absolutely going to buy 1. I love BMW.. i was going to let it go for 41K , and clear my debt, but its almost paid up end of the year. so i can let it go and use the extra cash for the BMW
