I am new here guys and I live in Swaziland. I have saved up some money and looking to buy a second hand BMW 318i E46 or a 120i. Im a huge fan for BMW. However, I have been advised by most people saying I shouldnt buy a BMW as it has very high maintenance costs. People have gone as far as saying you forkout R7000.00 for full service. I need informative advise.
Thankyou

Hey Sizwe. Welcome to the forum. I had the same experience when I wanted to buy a BMW. But I bit the bullet and just bought it because I wanted the 330i and I've never regretted it. I DIY most of my maintenance and it's really not that much more expensive than any other car. Also if you look after your BMW, it will look after you. I say go ahead and buy a BMW.

Don't know where the best is in Swaziland. You can always do an oil service, change filters and spark plugs yourself.

I was asking about that side Ntando, SA. I cant buy them here, they are extremely expensive. Even the car, my first BMW, I plan to buy it that side.

services even in SA are not R7000 unless they are changing so many other things on the car. So I recon any good service station in Swaziland can do most the older model (5yr +) without too much trouble, and Im certain you can buy parts from dealers in SA and they will ship to you (as long as u dont use South African Postal service) cheap enough.

I think the key here is to manage your expectations properly. Normal servicing is not really all that expensive, but its when the cars get a bit older, and things above and beyond just changing oil, plus and filters that need doing that can push the cost up a bit. Having said that, one can be smart about it, and often high quality parts can be purchased from the aftermarket, and fitment done by independent specialists at good labour costs, OR you can DIY.

If you are going ot buy an E46, these cars are now more than 10 years (mostly), and the problem is that most of the used examples will come with a backlog of maintenance that needs doing, unless you manage to find an enthusiast owned example. Just a word of warning, the E46 318i (N42) and 120i (N46) are not exactly renowned for their reliability.. they tend to develop many oil leaks and the valve stem seals usually need doing somewhere upwards of 100 000km. Having said that, Leo Haese are running a very competitive special for valve stem seals on those motors (R7900).

Maybe a good starting point is to find a specialist nearby you who can guide you with things to look out for on the models taht you are considering. Alternatively, the internet is filled with a ton of information on what to expect in terms of maintenance.

Thankyou so much guys I really got informed. I opted for the 318i and the 120i since the are a bit cheaper as they are old models, so if they then develop serious problems I have to opt out of them. Unfortunately I cannot affort to get the newer versions (E92) since my budget is stiff as I am mid income. I was looking to spend not more than R75 000 for the car.[/i]

Ok, if you spend R75k, just make sure that you have some left over for servicing/maintenance. I think the mistake that is often made is to have just enough money to buy the car, and then not expect it to cost any money to own. It often isnt that case.

Wow you guys are quick to respond. Well, I can have left over money for that. Do you think I can get the car at that budget?

Welcome, bud. With a 75k budget, I'd opt for an E36 and save the remainder for maintenance, mods, and repairs.

If fuel is a concern, a 316i, 318i, or my personal preference, a 318iS will do just fine.

Good luck with your search :coolShake:
