Morning Gents,

Can anyone point me towards someone who can service the roof on my 325i (E36) Convertible.

The roof is sometimes struggling to go up and down and needs me to "help" it. Also sometime, the back cover that lifts up to hide the roof when it is down, is knocking against the roof when it closes.

This is the old girl :)

Eish, this is gonna suck.

It's a real fiddly job and you need a doctorate in mechanical engineering to figure it out :roflol:

I'm not sure if the E36 system works the same as the E8x version, but the one I did I ended up replacing the motor/gearbox assembly as it had trouble clamping the guide mechanism operating the roof. It seems to use a clutch type affair that appears to wear out.

Good luck!

Wynberg auto trimmers are extremely good and have been in the industry for years and years... Just be warned, they are not cheap

Looks neat. I assume the car is in ctn? The tension bands will need to be replaced. Its a costly job. Keep helping it along for now. If not you will burn out the motors or snap 1 of the control rods (talking from experience here).

The back cover knocking seems like a syncing problem. Thats a easy fix. reset the roof as follows

1, pull orange tab under rear seat
2, Manually open roof
3, place pressure or right side of tonneau cover and open boot at same time
4, re-engage the motors
5, hold down button close and turn ign on keeping close button down till roof closes

Ant those tensioners will have to be done, the reset worked on mine for a short period but the lazy tensioners will cause it to catch on the lid again.

Send it up to Jozi, I will sort it for u :)

if its semi auto...twist handle, i can take a look. Probly just needs a reset

can also be the tension strap in the canvas that is lacking tension. I had the knocking issue with my green vert and had to install additional straps for tension

Johan from Sunroof Boyz fixed mine. Did a pretty good job. Even made a gear while I waited. Prices are good too. He is in Alberton. So you would need to bring the car to JHB. Check out his website.
