I am happy now that to decat and remap my 330d is a good idea. I would like to know how many on the forum have done this and what type of map did they use. I will rather use a mild map i.s.o. a wild one to save on running cost as this is my daily drive as well. (My car is a 2004 model - 150kw)

i still need to have it done, but im after a little more than average, so i have a list of things to do before a custom remap..

decat & egr delete done, looking to fit a bigger intercooler and a few small turbo mods before mapping

If you have a five speed, the box is rated at 390nm, six speed manual 530nm, six speed auto 600nm. But the 5 speed manual is known to hold up to high numbers. On the turbo side, you should have the same turbo as the E90...

@Netercol, What is the pro's and con's of a EGR delete? Will it be a custom made cooler? What and why do you want to mod the turbo? Sorry for all the Q's but it's good to know all
before one start modding away and see your ass.
@ P1000, I have a 6 speed box so i think i am save. How easy do you brake a box if you are on say 490nm. I do not drag and weelspin or do crazy things.

You wont brake the 6 speed box if it is not more than 530nm. EGR delete will gain response, fuel economy and it can cause water to leak in the engine and cause a waterlock, destroying the engine, so a delete is good. Cons will be the environment will suffer very slightly more.

I would aim for 530nm and 180kW on a remap, that should be quite safe. I would also keep 10k in a fund for a turbo, but that is mostly because of age and mileage, and really nothing if you look at the gains...

egr delete keeps a lot of carbon out of the engine, you wont believe the amount of buildup in your inlet after a few years, as the carbon from the exhaust gasses mix with the oil from the breathers.. also keeps the oil cleaner for longer from what ive read.
not much downsides, except the cats will not be able to clean up all the nox the engine will put out without egr at idle/light load. also i have noticed the ecu now and again logging a " insufficiant egr flow" error code, but it has no effect on the running of the engine..

im looking at fitting a intercooler core from a late model e90 330d, its more or less the same dimensions except for a much thicker core, or else a custom one, there is not much space for expansion if you have an aux. fan fitted. but this by no means a must if you are only doing a mild remap, the only must i would say is a decat.

as for upgrading the turbo, this is still very much unknown teritory, those that know wont tell me yet :)

some pics here from my decat&egr delete ..

Decat will also lower exhaust temps considerably, allowing much safer remaps. It would be a prerequisite for a big number map. Be warned, though the cars fumes will smell like a that of a diesel bakkie without the cats...

@ P1000, thanks for response. I would really like to have someone to comment who has done the decat and remap on a 330d.

i had it done on a e46 320d. car smoked a lot more afterwards, had an even louder diesel clutter noise and smelled like an Isuzu bakkie . . . i wouldn't have if i knew beforehand but thought it might save my turbo.

Sounds like you had a REALLY bad tuner, that just upped the fuel or fooled a temp sensor. Get it redone by a reputable shop, the results will be much more satisfying. It will most definitely not save your turbo, though...
