Need help with carburetor

Hi...

We have a BMW 316i E30 and for a while now we have a problem with the car when we accelerate to much, (push the car to hard) then the car can just rev and rev....until you stop the car and start again.

We originally thought it was a frayed throttle cable. I just took it in to have a new cable made up for us...but then the guy said that it is the carburetor that needs to be replaced.

Off course now that this guy worked on our car it is even worse than before. It sounds just horrible and at every stop I make the car dies.

Is it safe to drive and do I need to get a carburetor, or can it be cleaned out? What to do?

I had a Golf that did this...everytime clutch goes in, the revs fall to zero and car dies, effectively meaning that you jump start your way to where you're going.

Is that what's happening now?

That ended up being a stuck valve in the carb, so I would suggest you start there - just be gentle - there are some fiddly bits in there that, when broken, result in the purchase of a new carb.

If you're getting a new carburettor why not replace it with an after market fuel injector instead. I saw a DIY in popular mechanics a few months back.

Jasonbot..what does that mean..no more LRP? Also where would I start searching for this...? I do honestly not know much about cars....as I said we thought it was the throttlecable all along...

Well a carb is basically a mechanical fuel pump. It mixes air a fuel and delivers it to your cylinders where it explodes and keeps your pistons moving. An electronic fuel pump works better because it provides fuel consistently. I dunno if its your actual problem or what LRP is but thats just my 2c. I guess a mechanic would be able to help you better.

Thanks so much. I think I am going to find a place that specializes in Carbs and see if they can see if it actually needs to be replaced. Thanks for the explanation. LRP is led replacement fuel..they use this for the older models...

Oh... my bad. Thats before my time. I think you'll still need LRP though as replacing the method of fuel delivery doesn't mean engine conversion.
