Hi im a student of 20 years old.

My parents gave me the opportunity to search for a new car.
Im currently driving a Opel Corsa lite 1.4.

But im looking to buy a bmw. They gave me a price limit of 130 000.
So obviously im going to have to look in to get a second hand car.
As im new to cars and dont have a very broad understanding of bmw's overall.
I would like some advice from you guys. What models should i be looking at that will fit the price range etc.
They gave me a suggestion of the 120d. Is it any good ?

Thanks in advance
Marius

120D is a great car. Plenty of power & torque, good fuel efficiency.

What sort of car do you want? Why BMW?

To be honest look for the best priced one, between the 120d and 320d as both is awesome cars, If you really look hard maybe you will even get a 330d for the price :hammerhead: , stop it.

Ok, the 120d is awesome but then again it is a small car and maybe awesome for parking etc. I prefer the 3 series because of it size and comfort. Its not to small and isn't a comparison to a stupid GTI :hammerhead: (again :roflol:) and are in the class of the proper sedans.

Anyway, you cant go wrong with the 120d. Regarding fuel consumption let me tell you, don't listen to what people tell you. You will highly likely get around 6 - 8L / 100km on both the 1 and 3 series diesels. Even if you consider the bigger brother 330d the fuel consumption is almost the same, all you need to know is that it depends on the right foot (literally on that foot). Don't base your decision on size but on what you want. a 120d or 320d is the same with maybe a 0.1s 0-100km/h difference in acceleration

BMWs are fantastic cars if you enjoy driving. Their primary differentiating factor tends to be good engines and good handling/suspension, so in other words, good drivers' cars.

A 120d will fit your fuel efficiency mandate, and will be fun to drive to because it has a lot of torque.

Of course, when buying a used BMW, you need to consider that it comes with the corresponding maintenance costs. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it will be more expensive than maintaining your corsa lite. Research and knowledge is key here to manage your expectations properly, and budget properly for said maintenance.

The biggest consideration you should always have is maintenance. BMW and other premium car makers can have very expensive components.

Have you had a look at some of the new Fiesta's and Opel Corsa's? There are quite a few that will match your requirements without breaking the bank.

Don't forget to have a look at the 118i and 116i models if you have your heart set on a BM.

120D is a good option if you can keep it serviced and well looked after.
Good luck with your choice!

i would rather budget about R115000 for the vehicle and R15000 doing preventative maintenance and sorting out whatever issues it may have.

Highly unlikely you will find a car in that price range without issues. Rather adapt and plan for it now then you wont be disappointed after purchasing and it seems like this new car is so expensive and things are constantly breaking.

Whether it is a private sale or dealer, alot of owners(except for fanatics of course) neglect maintenance when they know they are going to sell or sell due to the number of issues they have with a vehicle.
