I believe the latest 335i's and 135i's are now using a single turbo unit. said to be more efficient that the twin units in the N54....

Whats your guys opinions, is it better? or is this a cost saving form BMW to replace two turbo unit with a larger single unit?

and none of the 335 / 135 are using single turbos YET
maybe on the next generation, but could be released with the e92 facelift

they're not just switching to single turbos, but also trying very hard to make it un-tuneable

haha

so true
it migh be un-tuneable for a few months.. maybe a year
but then it'll be cracked
just like the n54

hmmm.. the twin setup will always be superior as smaller turbos = faster spool and more turbos = more displacement.. really that simple actually..

The again... that said...does the N54 have dual vanos??

The vanos can mitigate the spooling issues of a larger turbo to such a great extent that perhaps the new engines are relying on optimum use of Vanos and NA speed of acceleration earlier in the rev range and then relying on the turbo past the 3,000 to 3,500 mark?

better power band and performance delivery,

The tuning has already been cracked so chipping isn't a issue. In the latest car magazine they mentioned next years models will have it but I have not read this in any international press release. Personally I think it is a error.
The Valvetronic will not create any tuning issues as it is mostly sensitive to increased rpm limiters and with a turbo car this is not necessary.

The software blue prints have been out and about long before the release of the motor. The N55 was created prior to the N54 according to VDO documentation I have read. I know of at least one company in Germany that has tuned software for the N55 in the GT.
The MSD81 was also cracked before it was even found in cars.

aah ok.. Bmw could however make changes b4 release, rite?
Or would that be too costly for them to undertake?
It just seems they will continue trying to stop or prevent tuning, even for a short period.

They rarely make last second changes.
