Looks like this particular dealership believes the entire engine must be pulled to replace turbos. :hammerhead:

I am astounded by the amount of opportunism displayed by the dealer.

What a shocker this is.

When my turbos were replaced, the engine was removed.

My buddy at BMW could not get the turbo at the rear off.

But he used the opportunity to replace whatever he could while the engine was out.

There must be some sign the that turbos have gone. Isn't excessive smoke out the exhaust one of the symptoms of a failed turbo?

Maybe contact Ross Duncan in Midrand.

He will tell you what's wrong and what needs to be done without ripping you off.

Consider getting the turbos from BMW and ask for a discount.

If it was my car I would take it to S&N auto in Centurion. Sakie is a BMW master technician. He is one of the few honest mechanics out there. He has worked on my E36, E90 and E92. Excellent work even better price.

On a side not, the Turbo's are manufactured by Mitsubishi. You might want to try them for a better price.

The most important thing right now is that I find a reputable place to have the car accurately diagnosed. Its one thing to plug in a machine and read out codes, any monkey can do that. This kind of situation requires a mechanic with technical knowledge of the N54 engine. The "puzzle" just doesnt fit together here. Turbo's dont just simultaneously blow at this kind of milage, especially with a constant service record. If the turbo's are in fact "blown" then there is more than likely a fundamental underlying condition to have caused the catastrophic and un-characteristic failure of these components.

I just need to find the best guy/company for the task.

I second Ross Duncan his work is tops, the only guy I take my car to if I can't solve the problem. My car is there right now. PM me if you want his number.

My bill at Autoglen came to R19220 in August 2014 which included the R6200 as labour. (113 units at R54.87) Turbo prices are the same, but there seems to be too many waterpipe feeds etc. I dont even see the anti freeze and oil top ups here.

Get a quote from another dealer .... or contact TuneTech or one of the reputable BMW mechanics/Workshop

To me they haven't given you any reason why they believe the turbo's to be faulty. A quote is not evidence of any diagnosis. :hammerhead:

Absolutely, seems like these guys do not comprehend the difference between fixing a problem and fixing a symptom.

Currently, we are just waiting on a couple contacts from BMW side to explain the report and provide justification for the suggestion of complete turbo replacement. Once we've got that information, we'll be able to decide how to proceed. Most likely with a true diagnosis from either Peter, Ross Duncan or Sakkie at S&N Auto.

Dealerships are a rip off. If the turbos do need changing you can get it done for R25000 incl parts and labour and you get better service than you would get at bmw. Dont go to workshops just because you know their names. Steves and RGM are overpriced. Search the net for a turbo specialist near your location or a BMW specialist workshop and gt a quote from them.

I got a quote for me n54 to replace both turbos incl labour for R24k , that was about a year back, but still thats cheap and it was from a turbo specialist who said he could even just remove the stock turbos and make both hybrids instead of putting in 2 new turbos.

Accompanying this message, the report:

"Please find attached quote in regards to your BMW having no power, our technician has diagnosed the turbo’s need replacing which is our first step.
Diagnosis of R1500-00 if quote is declined
Kind regards
Travis"

Not too far off topic...

A colleague with a 2007 335i got the yellow check engine light 4 weeks ago. Started car after work and light was gone. A week later he gets gearbox light and car is jerking. That also goes away.

Two Friday's ago car goes in for a service at SMG and he tells them about two warning lights. At 11am he gets a call from SMG - "Your engine has seized. We took car for test drive and the engine seized". Cost to fix is R235k :skit:, that is R140k for new engine and rest is for new injectors(???) and labour!!!

He had the car towed somewhere else and they stripping engine to see what the problem is.

:roflol: At that price, he could just replace the car

Yasis, dealerships take every opportunity to make themselves wealthy instead of helping a client, i would suggest taking the car to Gizmo/Axis or Tune Tech and getting them to check it properly before any decisions are made. I cannot believe they charge for a car wash, gosh...
