N46B20 tractor sound

Howzit peeps. Have a bit of a headache with the 318i. It recently started to sound like a diesel , especially at lower refs. Then I decided to clean the maf sensor, which didnt help although the fuel consumption went down a bit...score! But in the process of troubleshooting i found out that when my MAF sensor is unplugged the car is fine...except for it influencing the performance, but the knocking sound is gone. As soon as i plug it in however the sound is back...I have no idea what would cause this. So now i drive it with the MAF unplugged...its the n46b20 engine not the n42...not sure if that makes a difference. Any insight?

Driving the car with the MAF unplugged is a bad idea. Most of the settings on the car goes into a default setting to prevent possible damage to the engine. People often unplug the MAF as a diagnostic tool to check whether it is faulty but unfortunately it does not work. Unplugging the MAF only hides the issue so there is no way to determine what the actual problem is.

Hey Buddy,

I initially had this issue on my N46B20 when I purchased it.
After a few oil changes i made the decision to change to a multigrade oil and no issues ever since.

Sounds like a typical valvetronic unit failure. I do hope it is not for the sake of the thickness of your wallet

When last was the oil changed?

Maybe it just needs some good fresh oil?

Was serviced a week ago. Probably the valvetronic, won't surprise me....eish! Big dollars... :thumbdo:
