Just had the crank sensor changed over the weekend, been driving fine the whole week since yesterday whilst driving normally engine started to misfire. As soon as I gave gas it cut out completely, on restart very irratic idling and when I give gas it cuts out, any ideas?

1 or more Coils might be Bust

If you have another e46/e90 close by swap the coils and see if problem goes away.

Just like you would change plugs swap them 1 cylinder at a time in order to identify which coil/s is/are problematic.

If you have access to daignostics even better but this sounds like coils to me.

Another culprit could MAF or an air leak somewhere

Just did 600km with an N42,

I have to say this, what a lovely little motor, really like it.

7,5l at 125 all the way, not a whisper of trouble.

Nice little car, was a nice drive.

I thank the lord that mine is not broken though....

Did they only change the crank sensor?

Mine did exactly the same, but BMW replaced the crank sensor and both cam sensors. That sorted it out.

EDIT:
Sorry I fixed so many things I forgot which was which.
It was the fuel filter!! Easy DIY, sits under the car on the passenger side. Just be prepared for a face full of petrol! I think it was about R1050 incl. VAT at BMW.

Thats good news man! Glad you got it sorted!

Out of interest sake, how many km have you got on the clock? Was this the first time the fuel filter got changed?

173000km bought the car on 165000km poorly maintain, its now using lots of oil, going to the tackle the oil leaks next, might also get rid of it as its costing me too much to repair.

I usually pull a fuse or relay for the fuel pump when changing the filter. Crank the motor, let the car swith off and then replace. At least the bulk it out of the fuel line with the pressure being way reduced.

Thats the thing hey, if the car was just properly looked after, it wouldnt have problems like this. I'm sitting in the same situation, I spent about R16000 on my 318i. So thats why I'm selling it, its not worth it to me to spend anymore on it.
At least the next guy wont be sitting with these problems for the next 150000km...

I actually did that! Pulled the fuse, turned over the engine untill couldnt start anymore, then went ahead and took out the filter. But I still got a hell of a spray when the pipes came off. So I dont know what I did wrong...

I agree Leonard!! Dont get me wrong, they are really great! They just need to be in good condition.
I mean I got a 2006 E90 320i now. Same engine, but its only got 63 000km on it, with full service history, and motor plan. I cannot believe its the same engine!! Its stunning!! I love it!!
