I got the SMG paddles to work with the steptronic gearbox! Here is how:

Turns out I had the SMG slip ring all along, found it in the bottom of a box, lol. Also because I wanted this to be a plug-and-play affair I went round to the scrapyard and cut off the correct type of plugs needed for the conversion off of a scrapped E46 auto as to keep the plug colours the same.

Some close-ups of the SMG slip ring with the 2 extra pins in the 2pin plug.

Plug and play harness made up, around 1M in total length.

Old slip ring coming out.

Side by side.

Harness in place.

Unplug the shifter plug and plug it into the diy harness. Small black plug goes into the back of the slip ring.

With all back together, put the car into Sport Drive.

Now pull on a paddle and it goes into manual option, success!

Function and form, double bonus!

Awesome work thus far!

Would you consider changing the all black shift knob to one of these?

I think it might complete the look quite nicely and match the SMG wheel? :dunno:

Thank you guys, every new car is a blank canvas for me and I suffer from the 'DIY mod bug' really hard, nothing must stay standard and I must always find subtle ways to make it stand out from the rest...:skit:

The X3 is a similar platform yet completely different setup to what Im used to so Im going into this thing with much excitement.:=):

...besides, how many X3 builds are there?
