As promised I have the time now to write the review on my M235i
So I will start off with a brief history on my cars and then just give a follow up on the cars we've had (my dad) which all contributed to me being a BMW fanatic. So 2009 I had a mini cooper S, which I wrote off after 6 months, followed by the Mini Camden, with H&K sound system (important in the review), a Reno Megane RS (2012) which had brakes made of marshmallow’s and a silly gearbox and then my 135i (2012). My dad on the other hand, had many cars, but the one who sealed the deal for me was his M coupe, which was an amazing machine and I could remember going for drives with my dad as a ten year old boy. He currently owns the X5 5.0 (2012), the new X5 M 50D and the 650 convertible.
So it’s Thursday morning and the only thing on my mind is the M235i, which I will have to wait until 04:00 PM to go and pick up. After keeping myself busy for about seven hours my new car was only an hour away and there where many unanswered questions. Is it as beautiful in person as on the web? What would it sound like? Will it be such a nice drive as my 135i? and many more. So the time arrived to be on my way and saying goodbye to my 135i, at this point each red traffic light was an irritation and the short 8km drive felt extremely long.
Finally I got to the dealership and as soon as I walked in my first question was answered this thing looked like your super model girlfriend that has had her boobs done, dressed in her sexy lingerie, just sitting on the bed with a big grin on her face. So as the first question was answered, a new one popped up, who is going to move the car in front of me, because I want “her” to meet the road. My dad stood next to the car and handed me the keys, to which I replied “thanks ballas” and gave him a murse hug and a kiss.
I finally got a gentleman to move the 335i parked in front of me and was burning to get “her” off the showroom floor and into sport mode. My sales lady then asked for a drive and as we pulled “her” on to the road, the sales lady asked if I could drive slow as she was scared of speed, so scratch the sport mode and into eco pro mode it went. My second question was then answered and damn was I disappointed in the sound that came out of the exhaust. Thinking, what the hell did BMW do to make this sound like a hybrid??? After our drive, I was ecstatic as to see what the 235i would do compared to the 135i
Through the gates I went and into sport mode as well. My first gear change on the paddle shifts had me looking to the side, just to make sure the 650i wasn’t next to me creating a popping noise and boy was my first impression wrong on the sound of this thing. It was light years away from my previous cars, but this was all thanks to the automatic gearbox. My third and many other questions were answered, yes it does drive as nice as my 135i if not better and being able to toggle between beauty ( eco pro mode) and beast ( sport mode ) was exactly what any car fanatic would want, being able to drive comfortably and saving fuel and just going bananas with all the power. I decided to close my windows for a bit of engine noise (you know the nice one), geez did it have loud deep growl, reminding me of how impressed I was with the X5’s sound. Next on my list was to stop at the girlfriend’s house and showing off my new wheels.
As I stopped and had time to fiddle around for the first time I was very excited to try out the H&K sound system and would think back of how amazing it was in the mini Camden, but was I wrong, it was as if my ears had aged and the quality of not only the sound, but the bass decreased dramatically. I was not impressed and thought there could have been more effort done, especially for the H&K sound system. All the other functions were amazing and the interior was rounded off very nicely, except for the blue plastic underneath the trims, which made it look cheap. The keys could have also been designed a bit better, I preferred the old ones and the key-less entry would have been a nice standard function. The bucket seats on the other hand have a way of comforting you in corners, hugging you and forcing you to be in complete control of the car. There is also more space in the back for your complaining friends and enough boot space for two golf bags, so in other word more than enough boot space. The new navigation system is a definite improvement on the previous one and the new steering wheel is just the cherry on top (WOW) !!!! Parked on the grass I noticed how much sportier the car looked lowered and thought BMW would have gotten this right by now, also the M kit on the 235i is exactly the same as on the 220d and yes I know it’s not the M2 but still more effort could have been done. The M135i exhaust pipes are a big improvement on the twin pipes from the coupe version, which is on the left hand side and the new look suit’s the M235i perfectly.
In conclusion the M235i is the perfect car if you want to have a sporty yet sophisticated car, it’s like a combination of my dad’s 650 and X5 M, but just in proportion with its price. Yes the 650 and X5 are much better cars, but value for money there is not another car on the road for me personally that could give you that 10 year old boy feeling, it’s like driving in the M coupe, but with newer technology and more space, it’s like driving beauty but it has the capability of a beast, it’s like driving, well driving the ultimate driving machine.
