Merc is better built then BMW, its a fact..

Not the w203 c180k facelifts sadly - the 271 motors are well known for their cam chain/sprocket hassles. I have one and have been advised to replace chain and sprockets at 125 000km or else!

Suspension is not very well put together either, interior plastics seem to be poor quality too.

A plus point is that it is very economical - but give me a late model E46 any day.

just my 2c

Have to agree there. I owned a W203 C180k - left me stranded at the side of the road when it had just 15K KM on the clock. Had the sports pack and had a sh!t load of suspension bits replaced before 50K KM.

My FIL worked for Cargo Motors and said that no other Merc model had so many issues up until that time (2004/5).

I think after 2001 this goes for all brands. Everybody started using plastic all over the place, amd making flimsy suspension and thinner body panels to reduce weight.

I had an X3 for a day, and was very dissapointed at how badly fitting and cheap all the plastic looked. Only the top of the range models have kept some semblance of quality.

Went shopping this morning and passed two E90's broken down on the side of the road, that shouldn't be happening.

There's something to be said about the E46/38/39 era

As long as these older cars are around and the parts are available I'l keep driving cars that are put together the old way, a skill we seem to have lost with the current generation.

Great car man, these Mercs are actually not too far away from the 123 in terms of reliability. I know an old man who owns a 230e W123, had it for as long as I know, it has 660000km on the odo (last time I checked it in 2010)...always ran like a dream, has a FSH with Merc - never had a engine or gearbox replacement...those cars are just solid as they come IMO.

+1 W203 C180 is crap. Suspension hassles runs into 1000's X $$$$.

I were considering a W123 230e as a daily, but the wife objected... Not that she has reason, she has been using the BMW as a daily for 2 years now...

The E12/8 518i is giving me grief at the moment (Bosch K-Jetronic system issues), but as soon as that is sorted, I'll use the 518i more often.
