Good luck on this one CMan.

First panelbeating mod on this car should however be done to the previous owner's face...

Looking forward to the updates.

If nothing else you are brave.

A serious project to say the least.

Will you use dry ice or nut shells to blast the car?
Hope not chemical stripper although there are 2 schools of thought on that.

I wish you well on this project and please not 10 years

:bravo:

The early cars were the true lightweight cars and had no spoilers, a fiberglass rear bumper and minimal cosmetics. Fixed rear plexiglass quarter-vents and rear screen with a thinner laminated front windscreen as well. I want to try and get her back to as original as possible, so she should look like these photos that I nabbed off the net when I'm done.

<a href="http://s1082.photobucket.com/albums...p;current=1973_BMW_30CSL_E9_Coupe_Front_1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j372/AFFORDABLECLASSICS/1973_BMW_30CSL_E9_Coupe_Front_1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s1082.photobucket.com/albums...;current=1973_BMW_30CSL_E9_Coupe_Rear_3_1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j372/AFFORDABLECLASSICS/1973_BMW_30CSL_E9_Coupe_Rear_3_1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Not as impressive looking as the later spoilered and "batwing" versions, but probably rarer than most csl's on the market today.

You sir, are a brave brave man..

And judging by the quality of the work on the 2002, this car is in good hands.

Best of luck finding all the missing parts, and please keep us updated as this build evolves, as its going to be an awesome car once completed.

Can you provide any further history on the car, such as why it was neglected and now looks like this?

As with many old BMs, it fell into the wrong hands. An Indian Fella in EL bought the car and stripped it to repaint Red, then Green, then yellow. HIs family had a Auto-trimming shop in King Williamstown and he sent it there to have the interior redone for the umpteenth time. It stood under a corrugated iron shelter for years neglected. The corrugated structure eventually rusted through and collapsed on the car.

When the car was eventually towed away by another interested buyer, the interior bits and glass etc was left behind. The Auto-trimming shop closed down and the building was cleared out and I assume all the contents (along with the glass and interior) were dumped. I went to look for the parts once, but found an empty derelict building. It has since been demolished.

Luckily, most parts are compatible with standard E9's, but there are some seriously rare and expensive parts that I will have to source. As an example, a pair of lightweight front fenders has just come onto the market at EUR2,000 EACH!! That's R45k for two fenders
