My mom has the opportunity to get back into a BMW

Hi gents

As the title says, my mom spotted a 318ti in George that she likes, and now has the opportunity to get back into a BMW after she sold her last one in 2002, a 1997 E36 328i sportpack.

A 2002 E46 318ti, Silver with grey leather, with 169k km on the clock, for around R65 000, is the one in question.

No dents or scratches at all.

Car to be traded in is a '89 Jetta busy rusting to pieces which was bought for R15 000 around three years ago. Dealer will give R15 000 for the Jetta, so there's absolutely no loss there.

Good deal?

Should she go for it?

If the dealer is giving her what was paid for the trade-in, I'd say fair deal, considering it is a 1989 model.

So basically the 318ti is for R50K...........not bad.

Decent enough deal considering what she's getting for the Jetta... But the N42 engine in the 318ti isn't exactly renown for its reliability...

They tend to have valve stem seal issues, which leads to some very heavy oil consumption and eventually necessitating a rebuild.

169k km is a bit touch-and-go... I'd say drive the car and watch carefully for blue smoke - especially when coasting the car down hill in-gear and then getting back on the throttle. If it doesn't puff smoke, it should be fine... if it does smoke, walk away and rather search for a 325ti.

Thank you

I unfortunately can't see the car myself as I'm up in Joburg but will inform her of the issue to watch out for

My sentiments exactly. The 325ti is a MUCH better option.

She doesn't want a bigger engine :sorry:

Even when she had the 328i she said she'd prefer the 318i :dunno:

Yeah, I kinda doubt that a lady will really use all the power a 325ti has.
I've watched my wife drive, and most of the time barely utilises all of the rev range at all, and just coast along at the speed limit............
