Update:

Went to collect my car, and guess what??? It wouldnt start!

BMW called out and it seems that the "receiver unit" and "ring/reader" on the ignition have packed up and this is a "good" thing as at least it is not the ECU???

WTF, parts not expensive, but car will only be ready on Monday as thats when BMW will get the spares!!!

Oh well, the weather is K@K here in any case, hopefully the Sun will shine on Monday, and not rain like now!

Have a great Weekend Fanatics!!

:argh::argh::argh:

Don't despair Avus it's all part of the road the perfection, lucky it happen in the body shop and not on the road some where:thumbs:

Whilst I am waiting for my car, I have been doing a little bit of internet research and have found the following steering wheel in Poland...www.carsdream.com first seemed a little dodgy but after checking around they got a lot of +ratings on ebay. The wheel in the pic is the one I like and is $125 + $65 shipping. Total: $190, this works out at about R1900 excluding SA VAT and taxes. Seems quite ok price wise. I would rather support a SA company but cant seem to find something for the E36.

Let me have your thoughts when you get a chance.

Thanks Chaps!

Awesome wheel, but im sure a good upholsterer will be able to replicate it with your original wheel?

But if costs work out similar rather get this and you still have a spare

Update:

The nightmare has now started!! After much too'ing and fro'ing, my car is now on a roll back destined for SMG Auto Shelly Beach as it seems that it cant be started without the agents!

:argh::argh::argh:

This job has gone off without a hitch so far so I guess some inconvenience was to be expected, however I just wish this had been at the beginning and not so close to the end!

:yuck::yuck::yuck:

I will keep you updated! However i can just see the next excuse being that the spares cant get to SMG because the roads are closed because of the snow!

:cry::cry::cry:

looks good to me, maintains the e36 theme also

That steering is hot, sure you can do something similar with your own one.

Hope you get the car sorted soon, without too much of a headache.:thumbs:

Calypso, long story mate, let's just say 17 years of evils behind that cubby hole! Once they opened it up to sort out the blown receiver they found that a part of one of the modules has been bridged out, wires cut, harnesses spliced, UGLY is all I can say!

Agents are going to have another go tomorrow but are preparing me for a lock set! I guess it is the right way to fix it properly I suppose still tho, R8k.....SUPER OUCH!!!

Ok so the report form SMG is pretty gloomy! The original EWS was "bridged out" at some stage in this poor abused cars life and many of the wires have been cut and spliced etc. I took a decision with SMG that the correct way to fix this is with a lockset! At least then I will have a spare key, the keys remote functions will work again and the cars immobilizer will once again work within specification!

The risk of fixing the mess is a lot of time spent troubleshooting and maybe still a "dodgy" system! At least this way all will be to spec and OEM again!

Only problem is that the road between Gauteng and Durban still remains closed so no deliveries to Shelly Beach!

Please hold thumbs that it will be ready this friday!

Have a great day and a great long weekend if you are getting one!

how much is this gonna cost? I see in your post you mention R8000?

that seems like a relative bargain, considering jsut a key costs R1000+ from the dealer

R8360.00 excluding labour, so yep I guess about R10k by the time it's finished!

:cry::cry::cry:

Can't help dwelling on it tho, it's got to be done! Really don't want a half assed fix job to let me down somewhere when the ews and something else have a disagreement! Then I truly will be up a creek. Also don't want to be driving around with a "time bomb" behind the dash! :rollsmile::rollsmile:
