Hello gents

I have been a lurker on this forum for some time going through a lot of threads regarding maintenance and buying an older vehicle. I will be looking at buying a vehicle in the next 2 months and I think I have found one that ticks most of the boxes and I would really appreciate you opinion.

2008, 330d Auto with 160 000km. Xcede software (200kw 720nm) EGR delete and pipes done. It does not have Xenons and possibly does not have bluetooth which sucks a bit. It is a family members car that was bought to sell at a profit but I can still buy it at the princely sum of R115 000.

I am a pretty calm driver and do not really drive fast at all. The 6 cylinder feels really nice compared to the 320d though I must say.

1: What are some of the things I should look out for?
2: Any buying tips you could recommend?
3: I see the oil service light indicates that it gets serviced every 15 000 km, is that correct?
4: I assume I could fit brighter globes(HIDs maybe?) and I have seen some topics on getting the bluetooth to work buying parts from the scrapyard, I assume this is a possibility for this model as well?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Have a fantastic day.

I think you're right on everything. 15000kms sounds right for a diesel, but I'm no expert on these cars.

Seems like a good buy.:clapper:

1: What are some of the things I should look out for? Check rear tyres have sufficient thread or use as bargaining tool if they need to be changed, with 720nm on tap rear tyres are going to take a beating
2: Any buying tips you could recommend? negotiate the price a bit
3: I see the oil service light indicates that it gets serviced every 15 000 km, is that correct? it is component based, oil services are normally 15000km or less
4: I assume I could fit brighter globes(HIDs maybe?) and I have seen some topics on getting the bluetooth to work buying parts from the scrapyard, I assume this is a possibility for this model as well? not sure about lighting butmost E90s were fitted with a parrot Bluetooth device , this could be sourced from the scrapyard but I think coding needs to be carried out after installed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Have a fantastic day.

Shes a looker. Dont think you'll go wrong. Good luck bud.

Maybe get the gearbox checked
Do you recommend anyone in particular and do you know a ballpark on cost? I assume you are referring to a general checkup and possibly gearbox oil changes?

the car looks really nice man, just the colour of the wheels are a bit off..

115k for a beast is nt a bad price to pay..

Remove the aggressive software and have the gearbox checked out by ZF in Meadowdale because 720nm on an auto box is a time bomb.

Where's the fun in that Warren?:YesNo: If the box is gonna go, it's gonna go with or without software so may as well have fun! These boxes can take a bit of torque. Have it checked out at ZF bud, if all is good enjoy the torque and power!

There are guys making much more power and these boxes generally hold up just fine.

How are you able to tell that the software is aggressive?

While it might look like a bargain to buy so much car for only R115k, I am with Gizmo on this one.

Irrespective if it was a family members car, get the gearbox checked out, prior to signing on the dotted line. 700+nm is a whole lot of torque!

Seeing that the car is in the family, I am sure you can negotiate something!

Keep us updated!

Would you advice that it gets taking to ZF to get checked out/serviced?

Stock they make 160kw and 480nm on the flywheel at sea level, this one is making 200kw and 720nm on the wheels at reef level. Isn't it obvious?

The OP did not state whether it's flywheel or wheel power, however even if it were wheel power, do you release that these cars come de-tuned from the factory for emissions purposes?

There are M57's making 230wkw+ with no reliability issues, there's certain parameters that tuners do not exceed. The box is rated to 700nm, 20nm isn't gonna fry it.....

FYI there are cars with extremely aggressive maps that make absolute crap power..... Maybe do some research into what constitutes an aggressive map before making a bold statement as you have
