So I’m not gona lie , for the last couple of years I have had thoughts of selling the 330d and getting a G01 30d or M40i.
But I felt it really hard to let go, over the last 8 years this car has never skipped a beat, I have done 15 trips from JHB to DBN in this time, also had amazing drives in Mpumalanga on some of the best driving roads in the country , it still drives and performs as amazing as it did when I got it , perhaps better now after all the recent maintenance. I have so many memories with this car, some really epic ones and a few sad ones like when i got rear ended last year and this was the last vehicle my late dad sat in, i also still have a small scrape on the front bumper from the last time he drove it.
I also had a family friend that wanted to buy it for the last few years and he made me a strong offer at the beginning of the year , I thought about it briefly but then made a firm decision on keeping it for as long as I possibly can, this decision led me to explore further ways in improving it..
After the Gearbox service at ZF and installing the Android unit I still felt I could make it better and stay in love with it.
I’ve also discussed with Clint from MMS auto to install new engine mounts but honestly I don’t feel that its necessary right now, taking into consideration mileage is at 123000km and it still drives smoother than ever. I feel mechanically the car is sorted for now.
This is my daily and with not a care for performance mods it only left me with further aesthetic mods.
I replaced the front lip for the 5th time and also got a set of brand new OEM LED LCI Fogs.
But this only got my appetite wet to get more done..
I remember seeing a post from a forum member back in the day after I just the bought the car and he was selling a set of M performance Alcantara trims or was willing to swap them at least, in hindsight I should’ve jumped at it but I was hesitant at the time, over the years I have been searching for a used set on FBM and eBay , found plenty for LHD vehicles on eBay at reasonable prices but the RHD was always almost double.
I also toyed with idea of getting the existing trims reupholstered like I did with my Z4MC but knowing that it may never look as good as the originals I restrained.
On my last visit to the dealer taking the M2 for new plugs and oil , I casually went to the parts department just to enquire while waiting for a driver to drop me back home and he gave me an eye watering price of 14.5k for the set but stating its discontinued and only 1 left in SA which was brand new old stock, eBay prices are more or less the same after shipping and customs.
After little thought and to sweeten the deal with some discount I realized it was now or never and bit the bullet.
I also ordered the matching Gear lever cover, gear surround and handbrake handle and boot for an additional 7.5k after discount.
Only piece I’ve been apprehensive about but still considering getting is the matching M performance Alcantara armrest at a staggering 8k+.
I have been asking myself lots of questions.
Was it all worth it? Probably NO!
Are these parts stupidly overpriced for an old car, YES!
But does it make me happy and do these suttle difference ultimately make a difference to the look and feel?
DEFINITLEY YESS!
Also whilst installing , I remembered I bought a new used gear lever from a scrapyard and an LED gear lever circuit board from eBay to fix a small problem I have had since I kind of got the car, I noticed this immediately after the motorplan expired in January 2019 that the LED in D doesn’t light up when in Drive, this is a common problem on the sports shifter for this model across the range and I remember getting quoted for 14k in 2020 as at the time the entire lever needed to be replaced to fix this. I never bothered to fix it as it wasn’t a genuine issue.
I thought it was the right time at giving it a shot in fixing it as every time I scan the car for faults this pesky one keeps coming up, if you notice on my previous post on the ZF report it also showed.
At that same visit to the scrapyard I also bought the LCI center console tray as it has a slide instead of the impractical lid that’s on the pre LCI.
Note that all of the above parts were a pretty simple install with parts being OEM, fitment was perfect with ASMR levels high with each piece clipping in.
The shit show was the LCI cup holder tray, what I thought would be a simple install turned out to be an absolute PITA, with entire center console having to be dismantled and wiring connections to each function disconnected and then further cutting into the plastic is required just to make it fit 100%. With some considerable patience I did manage to get it all done right with only one screw left both physically and mentally
Future mods IA
- F8x pedals , I have a set but just cant find the enthusiasm to fit them atm. i still have the blue aluminum extensions which have become an eyesore now as its the only aftermarket piece on the interior
- I want to get new OEM M performance decals for the side skirts, after having the car detailed last year I noticed they beginning to fade
- Blue Stitching on seats like I have on the M2
- Maybe new wheels..
pics are not the best but i can assure you it looks wayy better in the flesh
