The Engine Control Unit controls the aircon clutch in most cars since 1996 (BMW E36 1992). After software improvements around 2001 on most BMW you should not notice any idle difference when aircon turns on/off. The aircon should also turn off on full throttle to give the engine a bit more power. Your experience of the engine losing power when aircon turns on is either a function of the power of the engine or version of ECU software.

Car aircons use about 1000W (1kW) of energy plus about 100-300W for the inside fan on high. This is the same for a mechanical or electrical pump. If the pump is electrical, an addition 1kW of load will be put on the engine by the alternator so the load on the engine will always be the same. The only way to "remove" the aircon load feeling is to smartly inject more fuel in the engine milliseconds before the a/c clutch is energised.

The current if you were to use an electric compressor totals to 110-130A. So if you would run off battery power, the battery will be flat in 15-20 minutes. So I imagine Mercedes either allow the aircon to be on for 2-3 minutes, or you experienced existing cold refrigerant in the system cooling the air by the fan.

Many cars since 2006 has residual heat ability allowing the car to heat the inside using current engine heat. In the past the radiator water was pumped through the engine with a mechanical pump. Some of this water is split off towards a heat exchanger in the passenger compartment that will heat up the inside of the car. Newer models have electric hot water pumps.

Hey petrivanzyl this a very strange question to ask but I rented the new c-class a while back, and I noticed whenever you switch on the aircon the engine idle doesnt change and it didnt take power away from the car,I asked a guy at avis and he reckoned it has an eletronic unit which isnt connected to the engine and worked fine even when the engine wasnt on.my question is does the new F30 have similiar technology in terms of the A/C coz it makes a big difference in town driving.
