My diff has developed a whine

Hi Guys.

So I was driving my e36 4door m3 yesterday and noticed that the diff has a harm/whine. It happens around 60 km/h and above. Also notice diff oil on the floor. I know the diff propshat flange seal is leaking. So my question is could the diff oil be so low to cause a whine. Or is it something more serious.

All depends on when it was last checked and how bad the leak is. Very possible, though. Only way to find out is check the oil, add if needed and listen. Is there any backlash? Jack up 1 back wheel and turn back and forth, feel/listen for play in the gear train. If there's trouble, you'll feel it.

You simply need to remove the subframe with the diff, give it to me and replace it with a new one:fencelook:

Lol. Thanks guys. Will open the filler today to check. I hope it's low. Now I hope the local spare shop has limited slip diff oil.

Ok so I jacked up the car on the RHS opened the filler plug only to find that the oil is ok. Not too low. So can the bearing be on its way out? If so I'd like to change it when changing the diff flange seal. What's the procedure?

Anyways I think I'll do a fluid flush when I'm changing the diff flange seal. Anybody know how to remove the nut? Do I count the number of turns or do I mark the thread with paint?
