My car feels ancient

Hallo all,

My car feels quite ancient where the sound system is concerned, it still has a cassette player! Anyone know if it is difficult to change the cd changer in the trunk to a USB port/input/player?

hey bud.

Please try and be more specific, what car is it?

You can get head units that have navigation and touch screens ect, as for the player it's as easy as buying another one and replacing the old one. You could also go the more cheaper way and just fit an aux cable to the head unit, there are tons of DIY threads showing you how to do this.

Thanks, sorry about the lack of info, it is a 2002 M320i E46, I just want to hook up a USB player instead of the cd changer, can I get a USB player to put in there? I don't mind the location, I think it is cool to have it in the trunk.

Hehe, I see I'm speaking to the right person, you are an E46 fan, impressive garage you got!

See if your radio can be modded to accomodate an aux. Your car sounds new enough and it will be a cheap mod.

If you google E46 aux you will find the DIY

Thanks man.

What do you mean by usb player? If you want to play songs from a usb device then get a cheapy mp3 player, and do the AUX mod on your radio. That will be suffice and the usb player can be located in your compartment under the climate control.

It all depends on what your budget is.

Here you go: http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=79

That should work on your radio, the AUX input was introduced in the 2002 models if not mistaking.

Maybe this is a very dumb question, but can I hard wire the radio and the MP3 player together so that I don't get white noise from a bad radio signal?

Better yet, I'll hunt around at the breaker's yards for a newer head unit, but then again, will it be compatible with the E46?

Hi.

Yes you can, jus tdo the AUX mod from the link I posted, then plug the aux cable into the MP3 player? No radio signal required.

Also to clarify here: My E30 has a Pioneer USB head unit, so it's totally weird for me to get into the E46 and having to play a cassette :roflol:

If you aren't too keen on the diy route, you do get a cassette adapter for an ipod that just pops into the cassette slot on the radio and you have tunes. You would then have a wire sticking out of your dash though so it's not as neat as the aux route.

Here's one that works with a normal aux cable: Car Casette Tape Adapter

I've been looking at doing this for my E39... But I think I'm going to go for an OEM solution....

Hi my name is Rob and I'm an OEM whore

I also have a cassette player in my E46, but because I have the OEM screen I didn't want to go aftermarket. CD player in the boot works most of the time, otherwise I just use an FM transmitter.

Apparently you get Bluetooth cassettes as well so there is no cable sticking out.

Probably the best route is to swap the thing out for a new radio that will set you back a few hundred that has Bluetooth, cd and Mp3.

Then you can load up MP3 CDs in the 6cd shuttle, and another one in the front unit as well, that's 7x mp3 CDs.

You cant navigate the folders from the steering, but you can have a shit load of music this way, all without interfering with cables, adapters etc.

Aftermarket units always look like shite in an E46 though.

They do. I know with the E39 you can upgrade the headunit to one that is AUX capable. You can then get an AUX kit from BMW and wire the port into your cubby hole or where ever... I'm sure its similar with the E46

unfortunately, the truth is that they look like shyte in any BMW regardless.

The trick is to get something that looks less shyte.
Go for something that looks like Robocop & a transformer made love and had a baby and that baby was your aftermarket radio and it will look kak.

Go for something that has similar colour LED and less fake chrome, and more matt plastic and you have something that looks remotely OEM.

Its a matter of preference in the end, some may like the robotransformer lovechild, others may not.

I have some bad news for OP.I also have a 2002 E46 with the tape head unit. The aux cable does not work on these.Must be 2003 cd front loader with correct software version which can be checked on the radio itself with a button combination.

Will try and find the link and post a bit later.

Other option to still keep oem look is to look for a newer E46 radio and do the aux mod or go for a GROM unit. Google it.

GROM is awesome. It integrates with your stock radio, supports bluetooth, external 2.5" hdd's and aux input.Even sends song tags to radio screen when bluetooth connection is used. Also costs about R1300 without import taxes.Keep full steering wheel controls ect.

I found something very interesting....

Saw it on Chris Brands DIYs,

very interesting if you wanna buy a Bluetooth diagnostic tool that uses your car's head unit (android device) as an interface. you can even read and erase codes from your head unit(its not explained here but apply your mind).

you get google maps and GPS

you get a car phone

You get Internet

You get loads more.

Its + 1hr DIY!!

Please Follow THIS  LINK

the actual DIY is click here
