Cheap things first - I will also run a Injector and Diesel Fuel System Cleaner tomorrow on a three quarter tank and see if that assists. Then swap out the filter and prime the car, which I know how to do....

Cos this fool has stood on the side of the road once already, and three times AFTER filling the car at the petrol station. :eek:mgwaiting:

It says 50km range, what it actually means is its running on fumes.

And on that bombshell. Its Dead.

Suspect the HPFP has lunched itself which is catastrophic on this motor so this b*tch gonna go cry himself to sleep tonight

Car broke down as I came off the freeway this afternoon, my mate in his X5 towed me home. Checked there is movement and sound from the tank pump and I got a engine light before it died.

Towing it to BMW tomorrow, this is not work I want ANYONE but BMW doing on this car. The HPFP is run by the timing chain and when it pops its major damage.

I am going to be positive, for now. :blueCry:

Christ, I have just realised, the timing chain might have snapped.

Well, I am a sad BMW owner tonight.

You often read about bearing failures on S54's, VVT faults on 318i's, Transfer Case Failures on E53 Xdrive's and you read threads thinking man it sucks to be this guy.... Well today I am that guy.

The N47 motor won motor of the year in 2010. My particular motor won even more awards than that, the sequential twin turbo diesel N47S.

These motors have been plagued by issues though, the first is High Pressure Fuel Pump issues, and then the main issue, timing chain failures - Whilst BMW has revised the design and issued recalls for fixes for models in production, the X1 has never been included in that. The issue derives from a manufacturing fault with the crankshaft sprocket - This causes the timing chain to stretch over time. Other examples of poor engineering include guides that allow too much movement of the chain, as well as extended service drains.

Essentially the N47 motor is a masterpiece, but also a ticking bomb and today mine ticked its last tick.

What you are looking at is the enclosure of the camshaft position sensor, and what you are seeing is where there should be a timing chain - Mine failed.

The chain and HPFP is positioned at the rear of the N47 Motor, any inspection or engine work will require removal of the motor, essentially, we don't know if valves have been damaged as I have no had a chance to do a compression test. I am deeply depressed about this.

No amount of maintenance or foresight could have prevented this, and I want to make it clear - The usage of the vehicle has ZERO affect on the chain, I am reading up on this and finding N47's with less than 30 000 miles snapping chains. This is a BMW engineering defect, even the tamest usage has seen similar failure and I would like to make a point of saying, I drive my car hard, and I enjoy my car, but I also maintain my car.

The next step is to strip the nose and remove the motor - The crank will likely need to be replaced, ECS quotes $1240 or R18 000.00 for the part alone, thats besides the engineering costs, new timing change and guide and any potential valves and sundries such as gaskets and lubricants - This folks is catastrophic motor failure.

It would be naive to not replace the HPFP while the motor is out, as well as attend to replacement pulleys, belts, tensioners and other wear and tear items, including having the two turbo's inspected and water pump changed. This is an unplanned expense, and as such I apologise for the Journal coming to a halt.

As I progress I will keep the thread up to late - I have not lost my faith in BMW or this vehicle, I am disappointed that given the extreme maintenance and care I provided the car, that I ended up being a statistic too.

So, sad Mike out, I took delivery of a Clubman Cooper today for my new startup so I guess its going to be pulling some weight from here on - Lets see, maybe this is an opportunity to go a little crazy with the N47 diesel motor moving forward. I am positive and I will share the experience with everyone following.

Damnit bro...not a nice thing as well. I too own a n47 engine and BMW refused to carry out the recall on the timing chain issue on it when I purchased the car in 2016. They said the recall time expired in 2015 amd theres nothing I can do about it.

Make me think now if I should just go out and get it done as i have full intention of keeping the car for at least another 5 years.

Truly love the passion you poured into the owenership of your X1 and I think made up members realise what a capable car it really is. Repair it at your pace and im sure she will continue to grant the smiles thereafter.

Congrats on the mini acquisition as well, create a thread for it also

Ag damn thats a bad outcome. Sorry man. Take your time with the repairs and rebuild with quality parts. Replacing with another low milage engine could be a cheaper option...but one has no guarantee the timing belt wont snap again. Its a gamble with Bmw cars we all take.

Hi Everyone

The feedback is sombre.

Having spent the best part of yesterday discussing this with the workshop managers and foremen that know the car at BMW Canal Walk and Tygervalley as well as researching this I have the following to conclude:

1. Valves, Crank, Pistons, bearings and guides will all need to be replaced.
2. The Motor is uneconomical to repair - Repaired motors whine, vibrate and have endless comebacks which is why in plan, BMW opted to replace motors rather than repair them like they did initially.
3. Unless the parts are fitted by BMW, they will carry no warranty, so for any peace of mind, its BMW or nothing for the rebuild.
4. Opting to go the rebuild route will cost R100k+ at BMW, a bit less elsewhere.
5. There will be no assistance from BMW - Even a squeaky clean, FSH BMW X1 would not be considered. They would have made a goodwill suggestion if the car was in the 6 months period OUTSIDE of a full 7 year motorplan, but its been a year since the plan expired.

Further to that, the vehicle is modified, which immediately disqualifies it for assistance.

This leaves me with the option of a R30k+ used N47 Motor (BMW is confirming if a single turbo motor can be used if the ECU is supplied with it) and then a further R10-15k on preventative maintenance to make sure the replacement motor doesnt lunch itself either. All in, expensive expensive and expensive.

Given I am busy with a new startup and have sunk my savings and cash-flow into it, the car is going to stand for a bit, because Murphy really knows how to plan his discord.

Found a workshop to store it in for a fair monthly rental, will grab a set of axle stands and a car cover - The workshop owner and myself personally will pull the motor and dis-assemble it and the workshop foreman at BMW SMG Canal Walk, who has been so helpful, has offered to carry out the inspection and advise me on the repair, if its feasible or not.

It will be about 3-4 months until the car is back on the road. For now, the MINI Clubman Cooper I bought (was on my way to fetch it when the X1 broke down) will have to do duty.
