I have come to this point MUCH sooner than planned. So I need to find a new (2nd hand) engine. Now the question is: Stay 320i or go, say, 325i? If I go for the 25i, need info on: electronics, ecu, those kinds of things, and the the gearbox. New one? Or can the ratios be adjusted? What else? I need to know as much as possible from my fellow fanatics

And then of course the budget.. At this stage I am not 100% sure how much it is, but I need to find out how much it will cost me. For everything. (engine -- labor) :fencelook:

I suppose to get the 25i it will be more expensive, I just want to know how much more than just straight forward another 20i?

:ty: in advance

I would stick with the 2.0 for resale and originality.

let me get this right.... you sent the car to the agents for repairs, you paid them nearly R40 k and now you still have to buy another engine?

You did not have a third option in your poll.

But think about a third option - get rid of the thing

You can save the money you have and buy a decent car. There are 120d and 320d with decent milage that are going for under R90,000. You just have to look carefully. These cars have the second generation turbo diesels and will give you many trouble free dtives depending the condition you buy it.

The day of replacing/overhauling engines are over and reserved for those that are working on track or restoration projects...there are many and better alternatives to replacing an engine; costs considered.

An unrelated, non BMW example, just to give you a sense of how dynamic the car market is. I own a 2004 city golf with milage under 100 000 kilometers...i seldom drive the car...but when ever i do drive it, i am impeessed with its fuel consumption; comfortable suspension and willing 1600 engine...it just goes and goes...this little car is in excellent condition with zero rust...i normally look after my cars well, even the non bmws. I had its resale value recently market valuated and i was quoted R40,000. And i suddenly realised why there are so many city golfs on the road...they are serious value for money and you can find a very, very low milage car in this bracket.

Now relate this story to your (third option) list...which is not there.

I agree with rick.

Also the cost of converting the 320-> 325 wil be costly and if you want 325 might be beter off buy a 325 and selling the 320

I do see some sense in what you say. If I could I would replace my car. No money for that. Sell it as is, will I get R30-40k? Then buy another car of +-R90-100k. Meaning spending around R60k. At this point in time, replacing the engine is the option to go with.

I'm not the one paying for my car, so I don't have a big influence of what will be done. As a matter of fact, it looks like my sister is going to pay for my car.

I agree with the above, for better resale value and less expensive fiddling, stick to the same engine size! Then later on can sell it on and get something else. I still find it crazy that R40k was spent all for nothing essentially, but at this stage it's a case of cutting losses and finding the simplest (practical and financial) solution.

Yes. After 4 months of work, and new problems when it came back from them, they refuse to fix my car..

That is indeed the way to go now. Find the best practical and FINANCIAL way to get the car running.. As I said, I don't pay. Not entirely my choice of what happens. That is why I came to my fellow fanatics for some advice

The reason why I considered the 25i engine, if it can be done at a reasonable price, it is an option to consider. If it will cost like R10k more than just 20i, okay, stay 320i then

It's almost wishful thinking :fencelook:

Swopping out with the same type engine will the easiest, cheapest, and quickest solution. A 325i motor will fit straight in, but you will need to change some electronics. Unfortunately I cannot tell you what electrics. Gizmo might be able to help you with that.

speak to gizmo about what parts are different... im pretty sure he will also do the job for you... maybe get a quote from him and a few quotes from other people on how much swapping in another 320i engine then decide from there...

gizmo has the engine from the 3l touring conversion he is doing and he can do the work for you so i would definitely speak to him about it...

your car is not special enough to be worrying about originality there are plenty e46 320i out there and honestly resale is out the window now you have spent way to much on this car already...

get the most you can out of this swap for as little money...

That is exactly my plan here. The resale on my car WITHOUT the problems is worthless. So I'll rather spend a few on fixing it and driving it for another year or 3. Hopefully

Add that third option

You spent well over R40K getting your car fixed and now you wana spend more ???

If I were you I would sell that car and buy a 325i, otherwise if you looking for something cheaper to run, get an e36 328i (cast iron motor).

At this point in time, it makes better financial sense to fix it. Let's say I spend roughly R25k now. Add that to the R30k I MIGHT get for my car, R55k. I can't buy a decent car, never mind another BMW for that kind of money. I am now in the position to sounds like a spoilt brat, but I will find it very hard to drive something other than a BMW.

So, I/we'd rather spend R25k to fix the car and drive it for another year or two, rather than buying something else now.

But no... Citi Golf :yuck: (No offense to the people driving them) I just can't like it, and according to my dad, it is one of the unsafest cars. He said that he'll never buy a citi..

FYI. Busy talking to Gizmo
