1st: How did I get to this car.. (Skip to 2nd if you don’t want hear me babble)
Back in 2016 I sold my E87 120i M sport and bought an E90 320d LCI, the 320d all be it an amazing machine at the time lacked the fun factor of a sport young mans car which I was at the time, this lead me to buying an E86 Z4C 3.0 as at the time I was scared to go for the S54 in the M coupe, fast forward a few years to the end of 2019 early 2020 I seen a forum member selling his clean, maintenance up to date Z4MC, I knew this was the one to have and the opportunity came during lock down where I traded the 3.0 for the M.
The Z4MC with all its nicheness , nuances and impracticality was an absolute gem to own and enjoy of the next 3 years that I owned it.
I kept up with all the maintenance and added subtle upgrades to it and it got me realizing that M cars are so much more rewarding if you take care of them.
This was a special car and I always told myself that if I ever were to get rid of it, it would be for a 1M.
In Mid 2022 and early into 2023 I had viewed and driven almost every 1M available for sale.
There were 2 examples in particula that I was really keen on and the only thing that stopped me from doing a deal was both dealers didn’t want to offer me fairly on the Z4MC coming in at a mere 140k from one and at 170k from the other. (in hindsight maybe I should have taken that loss on the Z4MC and gained later with the 1M as I seen them shoot up in value +/- 100k a year since.
That’s when I started casually looking at F82s, I always loved the look of them.
I found an early model with low mileage (mid 30ks) in my price point and thought it wont hurt to go have a look, the car was mint and to my surprise this dealer offered me 100k more on the Z4MC than the 2 above.
I now had an itch that I created and wondered what if, a few weeks later a deal was done.
The F82 as amazing as it is just didn’t give me a buzz though, it was a flawless GT car, an awesome daily as i dailyed it for 3 months but that there was just something that didn’t make me gel with it.
Perhaps it was the size, a bit too bulky for me or it was too similar in spec to my beloved 330d, alpine white on black , I would have kept it if it were YMB or BSM.
Another factor for selling it was work moving me to KZN, I found my future a bit uncertain at the time and this car was never necessary in the circumstance I was in.
I sold it in November 2023 taking a bit of a loss, 2 weeks later I was confirmed to be back working in JHB as the apartment lease was expiring in December.
I now felt a void of not having a sporty car and as algorithms would have it , I found a low miler E82 135i LCI DCT that would pop up on a Black Friday ad, another car I had on my radar and it was less than half the price of the F82.
I messaged the dealer asking for Service History etc, got a reply in minutes and was notified that if I paid a deposit today id get 10k off.
I was in Durban and this car in JHB , luckily I had a buddy that went to inspect it out for me ,I did all the necessary checks and paid the deposit with me only collecting the car and paying the balance in early January 2024.
After being in Durban and doing an amazing garden route trip to CT in December 2023 I was highly looking forward to collecting it.
I always had a soft spot for the E82s and this one with the N55 mated to a DCT I just loved driving it as a daily and for spirited runs, I even toyed with the idea of fitting an OEM 1M body kit.
But at the end of the day an M car is an M car, period, and I still wanted one.
I was reluctant to selling the 135 as I new I could never get another one with in its condition with its extras, however a year later in January 2025 a friend of a friend found out I had one and offered me what I paid for it, I thought it to be fair as I enjoyed the car for 12 months and sold it.
Now knowing that a 1M would be out of reach and if I bought one it would be for investment purposes only and that I couldn’t enjoy it and add many miles to it, the next best thing in budget was an F87 OG M2 which I collected in February 2025.
This car had a sweet spot about it but after owning an S55 prior you just know that this car was always lacking something in feel and power and this finally lead me to believe that that an M2Comp is the best car for me. S55 power in an F87 body and this would be the one I would keep for the foreseeable future and hopefully even longer.
In January 2026 a year after owning and selling the OG I knew that my next sporty/weekend car would be an M2C.
The other 2 cars that would make the top 3 on my list would be a GR supra and a 718 cayman GTS.
The cayman would possibly be the best drivers car from the 3 but honestly found them overpriced for what they are, The Supra being around the same money as an M2C was also a solid choice but my heart already knew it wanted the M2.
2nd Now the car.
2018 M2C DCT in Hockenheim Silver Metallic with 55k km when I bought it and minty fresh, even the seats still have the matt finish. FSH with BMW.
There were a few examples for sale in Feb this year when I started looking, as per my previous post I didn’t know whether to wait another year before getting one, year model and spec list were quite redundant as there aren’t major differences between a 2018 and 2021 year model if any at all.
What lead me to getting this specific one was that the original owner had full frontal PPF from new (Bumper, fenders and bonnet) and bought almost every OEM carbon M Performance part available to fit on as well as have BMW fit an Akrapovic exhaust.
Fully exterior OEM M Performance CF parts , Front Lip , wing mirrors, side aero skit and rear spoiler and diffuser are all OEM Carbon, interior upgrades were OEM M gear selector and gear selector surround as well as M Performance hand brake leaver and the LED steering wheel.
A bit of story, the car has 2 comments and I was aware of this and did some homework before pulling the trigger, The dealer told me this before even viewing which I appreciate, 1 was weirdly for BMW fitting the Akrapovic and 2 the car was sold in 2025 from BMW Midrand to a gentleman in Cape Town, but in transport to CT there was minor damage to the front bumper and roof, the customer didn’t want the car after delivered with these blemishes so it came back to JHB with BMW ABS doing the repair.
This didn’t deter me as I confirmed with ABS and from previous pictures of damage that damage was minimal, guy that PPFd the arches also used paint measure to confirm the only metal panel done was roof.
ABS also had replaced the PPF on the front bumper after it was repaired to put it in a position it was like before the damage.
3rd Work done so far
Immediately after taking delivery I took it to BMW for a fresh oil change, filters and spark plugs.
In the first few days I also noted the front tyres were new and changed last year to Michelin PSS but the rears were PS4Ss with some wear, this irritated me so by the second month of ownership I had all 4 tyres changed to a fresh set of Michelin PS4s from Mintys Sandton, wanted to go bigger width but decided factory spec was best ,245s in the front and 265s at the rear.
In the 3rd month after a drive back from PTA I noticed the dreaded squealing sound from the PCV just before I parked off the car (common S55 issue), I knew Clint from MMS was the only man to do this job.
For about 4 weeks the car wasn’t driven as I was overseas and sourcing the OEM gasket and valve cover and waiting for Clint to give me a booking .
@johnDoe , as always did a steller job and kept me in the loop with the entire process.
Immediately after this I had the car detailed and new PPF fitted to the entire rear arches before I took it on a long distance drive to Durban.
Apart from a few patches of roadworks on the N3 ,the drive was immaculate and made me fall deeper in love with this car.
Just the nature and character of it is such a joy, its small, nimble, agile, playful but with an element of danger when pushing it.
It really is two cars in one with just a press of a button, In M1 I have it in its most muted form and you wouldn’t know the difference between it and let say a 220i but in M2 when the Akras open up and everything firms up its screams with eargasmic blips and whips ,feels serious and brutal.
I also love the 2NH big brakes it came with as an optional extra for added assurance when pushing it.
Bought a set of yellow DRL modules before I got the car but didn’t fit it as I wanted a spare set of housings to fit them to, didn’t want to remove them from originals. I recently fitted these as well.
4th Future work/mods/upgrades IA
- Now that the rear quarters are PPF’d my goal is to get the entire car PPF’D, I want the doors done before year end and the back end done next year.
- I've also been on the hunt for OEM 763 wheels as I want a subtle OEM+ look, have a few leads, the 788s are mint and look proper but are also kind of PITA to clean.
- Steering Wheel - yeah the M Performance alcantara LED is great, but with my recently acquired Carpel Tunnel Syndrome i feel the center 12oclock position where the screen is, is a bit too thick and want something a tad slimmer
- HAS kit, KW or M Performance in the next year would also be a great upgrade.
- want aluminum charge cooler and inlets but upgraded Crank hub first before any power or mechanical mods.
- Colour wrap? I Seen Chris Harris’s review of his own M2CS and I love it in the green with gold wheels.
For now im just happy to enjoy it as is.
