My 320d is broken already

Hey guys

i got my brand new 320d about 2 months ago

After a week or so I started hearing what sounded like an exhaust vibration. This only happened when it was cold in the morning so I thought ah its just the exhast that needs to be aligned or something

I took it into BMW today and it turns out its the Vibration Dampner on the engine thats gone and the part is going to take 2 weeks to come from Germany. I thought I stopped hearing that when I sold my alfa except it was italy then now its Germany.

So the Service guy said I can have the car back and drive it. So I asked is it serious and he said yeah if it goes the engine will come loose and rip all the belts and pullies off the alternator and water pump and there is a posibility of tearing the exhaust just don't go on a long trip and you should be fine.

So obvilously I did not agree with his assesement so I called BMW customer care and gave them a piece of my mind and asked if they will cover the damage to the car if this goes knowing that the fault is there. The car only has 2000 km's for F$%^ sake.

So they said they would call the dealer

in the mean time the guy came to collect me to pick up my car so I went with him

I get to the dealership and all of a sudden there story changes no sir I just would not want you to drive that car in that condition could we offer you a coutesy car so you can use that till the part arrives

So they kept me waiting there for one and half hours while they organise a car. I go to sign the papers for the courtesy car and they say sorry sir but if you have an accident with the car you will be liable for a 15000 excess. So I what the F^&% are you on I started making such a noice the dealer principle came down to see what was happening. After a discussion with him he brought it down to R7500 still crazy but I suppose I have to deal with it.

I go to the car and Guess what its a 320i :yuck:

Well I suppose it could be worse they could have given me a 116i.

So here is to missing angry tractor for 2 weeks in my temp 320i.

Why don't you use a different dealer ? On this Forum there are plenty of threads describing bad and good dealers. The closest one is not always the best. Another better dealer might have had the part in stock and you are not bound to one dealer.
You have been unlucky and had bad luck.
Hope your car is fixed quickly. I have always had good service but sometimes had to take a days leave and travel 160 km's to have my car serviced at a good dealer and avoid the one close to me with the moron as workshop foreman. Good luck.
The "angry tractor" is a super car. I love mine !

"and the part is going to take 2 weeks to come from Germany"

Well I ordered about 30 odd parts for my project car, and guess what......Everything must come from Germany. This I can understand and even accept as the car is 19 years old.

BUT:

To import spare parts from Germany for a car that's currently in production, has got to be the lamest thing I have ever heard in my life.

What makes it worse is that actually build these cars here

I just have the feeling these guys are guessing what is wrong all I need is for it to come back and it has the same problem.

I took my previous BMW to this dealership and I found them quite good I suppose I just have to trsut them a bit to get it sone right

Did you have any work done before the courtesy car saga? I had my exhaust aligned during the week and it cured my rattle (which I thought was due to worn engine mountings)

Ok so let me get this straight: Are you angry because the car broken so early in its life, because the part will take so long to deliver to SA or because you got a measly old 320i crap for a loan car?

that aside, anyhting is better than that god awful 118i. :yuck:

A bit of all of the above mostly because I have to wait 2 weeks for the part for a car that is built is SA that should never be the case and as Hellas said it could still be the exhaust that causing this all I need is to get the car back and the rattle is still there :argh:

Also the way the dealership said I could drive the car with the potential of a very serious failure which did not sit right with me.

Speaking about the 320i its actually funny it feels like I am driving with the handbreak up all the time I was actually laughing today when I was driving it thinking to myself I am really going to use a lot of petrol driving this rubbish. If anyone is thinking of buying this car to save money on petrol don't do it

I cannot believe you have to wait two weeks for a part that is one of the most common breakdowns on these cars. The parts manager must be brain dead.

Is it a common thing to go on these cars

I read that early model 320d in the e46 had issues with this breaking but there was a recall and the e90's were a lot better. Its no only in that dealership. I confirmed with BMW costomer care that there are none availalble in the country

The thing that bugs me is they they build these cars here but I am sure that they have seperate parts for that.

Are you sure your diesel is local? I know my E46 diesel is from mother Germany.

As for the crank vibration dampner pulley, yes, they do break but I am disappointed about how quickly yours went.

On the other hand, I were at a BMW indy shop the other day for my exhaust, and the one mech opened to bonnet to specifically check out that pulley. Cause it's a diesel and cause they break.

I thought it was very kind/thoughtful of him. :) And here's the best part. My car is on 185k and the pulley is absolutely fine.

It must of been a defective one that they put in at the factory

Yes the 320d I have was built at the BMW factory here not Germany

All 3 series I am not sure about the M3 though but the rest are build in SA I think all right hand drive ones are built here globally

WOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!! Angry tractor is back

Just picked it up this morning and handed back the keys for the 320i Loan car

I am actually surprised how depressed I was driving the 320i I never thought a car could depress me but I guess it can

Really love my car I must say you don't appreciate it until you don't have it.
