My 1969 2002

So, after a week or two of keeping quiet, I can now finally show you my new baby.

It is a 1969 BMW 2002. Car was built early 1969 and was delivered to Ryce Motors (BMW importer) in Nairobi Kenya on March 20, 1969.

The original colour was nevada grey.

The car is going to require a complete restoration. It is complete with engine (needs a rebuild), gearbox, interior and pretty much everything.

I have allocated myself a 10k budget for every 12 month cycle. I am planning a 5 year restoration, and I think a total budget of 60k will get me a very very decent little 2002 eventually.

First thing is to get the shell stripped down, remove rust and take it to primer level.

Then back into storage for a year or so, while I build the budget for stage 2.

Inbetween I will mess around with the smaller things, such as cleaning chrome bits, spraying wheels, repairing the dash etc.

I have not yet decided on the sequence of phases 2, 3, 4 etc, but it will most probably be suspension, then interior, then motor, then body and finally assembly.

I am buying the car from Classicman, and will probably rely on him, Luis, Cyclone101, and whoever will be able to assist, in pulling this off.

You will remember that Classicman posted a thread in which he said he is thinking of restoring this car and selling it to a fanatic. He will be starting a very cool restoration of another classic very soon.

Anyway, enough with the chit chat, here are the pics of the car in it's current condition.

So, Lil Blue is going to need a fair amount of tlc.

The original colour is this (searched the web):

I am not sure if I am keen on that colour, but like Classicman said, I will change my mind thousands of times before the car is completed.

The car will go onto a car carrier around end of next week, so I will probably see my new baby in two weeks or so.

We had a 2002ti in the family in the early 90's, and I have been yearning for one for years now. Seems it is finally happening.

Thanks guys.

I am afraid the progress thread is going to be very long, with long pauses of nothingness inbetween.

Gonna have to go and fetch this thread from the shelf and dust it off when something new happens.

It's like an episode of Chasing Classic Cars.

I'm sure this is going to be a costly affair that will be worth it in the end.

Good luck with the build.
