That is correct, short trips are not ideal ...you can always do a downpipe which negates that issue.

but still, short trips are not advisable, if you have no other choice, then frequent oil services (around 8k kms intervals) would be required.
will be used to durban a few times a year so guess not all trips will be short but will do low mileage when in jhb.

I also went from a petrol VAG car (1.8T) to an F30 320d.
The 320d is not going to give your the same performance that your GTI is currently giving you.
If you want similar (or rather better) performance, rather consider an F30 330i.
Even a tuned diesel car will never have the same driving characteristics as a petrol car (especially a 2.0T).

My recommendation would be a 330i or an A4 B8 2.0T (165kw). The B9 2.0T 140kw is weak and the B9 2.0T Quattro 185kw is too rare and overpriced.

Side comment - are you OG 2 Scoops from YouTube?

stock for stock these cars will be very close on the quarter mile. Youll be doing it in a car thats give or take 10 years younger with a much better safety rating and good economy. A nice cabin and good refinement compared to the older 5.

The f30 330i is priced too close to the 330d and only avail as LCI models only, therefore >2015 models ...they also seem to be priced around R350-400ko_O

A 320d has enough power to overtake when needed and have a little bit of fun when required. Stock I think they make around 115KW on the wheels and around 135KW to 140KW on the wheels with a downpipe and tune.

Will be faster than the Type R for sure and more useable power, more effortless drive. May not feel as fast though.
If you can live with the power, then I feel it would be great.

I too find that as I have gotten older, I want more comforts and can sacrifice a little bit of power. Even on my bike, I do not push it all the time and only have fun every now and then. When I was younger, or when I first got it actually. Each time I took off from a robot I would be hitting 100KM/h in 1st gear.

I'd suggest removing the DPF, might as well do software at the same time - but can leave it stock and do software when / if you want a little more oomph. However removing the DPF will be a good idea considering the mileage you do.

care to elaborate or just purely because of power etc
Actually stock vs stock i would say both cars deliver similar performance figures (no scientific testing, just my own gut feeling). The 320d is competent and is probably all the car you will ever need in real world driving scenarios, but to me its abit boring. The GTI for me was the more exciting car and makes you feel abit younger than you actually are. Yes the BMW is rear wheel drive and everyone will argue it can go sideways but realistically how often does one have the opportunity to do so. Also clean Golf 5 GTI's have become abit more rare on the road, whereas F30's are quite common.

I'd get the 320d only if I needed the extra space.

Hey bud, definitely a good replacement for the G5. You will have similar power and get double the mileage on the tank of fuel. If you getting one out of plan, fit a downpipe soon as you get it to help with the turbo lifespan. Drive it as is for a while and if you feel you want more power then you can do a remap. Not sure if your brothers E90 is tuned, but there is a chalk and cheese difference after software.

i have a feeling i will miss the performance aspect of the gti but then again i went from a golf 7 gti to a golf 5 gti and although i could notice the performance difference it didn't phase me.

had someone ask me about the 2SCOOPS forum name when i joined here as well and nope not him. In fact i have used this forum name on other forums well before he started his page lol

those look like m47 (e90 prelci 320d) figures, the N47t has a bit more, ive seen them dyno around 130wkw / 430wmn stock, with sw + dp...you looking around 150 wkw and 470nm

I went from a 2011 320D Msport to probably one the cleanest Mk 5's in Jozi.
The 2011 320D had a map and downpipe did 142wkw and 440nm at Kar.

Then i went to the mk5 because the urge was to much. what a mistake.
The drive quality is just not comparable. The E90 is way more quiet, no road noise, feels solid, handling no comparison too, the e90 Msport handles like its on rails.

Then there's the consumption. The Gti i had was perfectly maintained, and had a Darkartz stage 2. Was it fast and fun... yes.
Was it that much faster than the 320D... no.
I drive very short distances and all city driving. I used to shift gears at 2000rpm on the Gti to try save juice lol. It just bugged me to always be monitoring the consumption and get way less the 320D.

And once you get used to not worrying about how much petrol you've used, you will get used to that trust me.
Every time you get more than 700km on a tank with town driving, trust me you will thank yourself.

Never mind when you go on holiday long distance, and get 1000km on a tank.

I missed the premium feel of the Bmw so much that i sold the Gti and went an older (but mint, 109000km) 2007 Pre facelift E90, and it feels and makes me feel good way more than the mk5. You get used to no rattles and road noise etc.I would always feel fatigured after a highway stint with the mk5. With the Bmw and lack of road noise etc, you cna drive for hours and feel refreshed.

so that's an E90. An F30 is an even better drive with the newer gearbox. Especially if you map it, and map the gearbox, what a pleasure!

so my opinion, i think its worth it. Even consider looking at an E90 330D.

Does the down-pipe not make it too smokey? Also won't the sound become terrible? Asking for both F30 320d and 330d.

A stock F30 320d LCI has 140kW and 400nm on the flywheel...they def don't dyno 130wkw and 430nm stock on the wheels. You're lucky of you see those stock figures on the dyno without doing anything...talking from experience. With an aggressive tune and dp you could probably get 150wkw and 470nm on the wheels. I saw one three weeks ago dyno 135wkw and 383nm on the wheels with a conservative tune and dp on a stingy dyno...so could get a little more on another dyno perhaps.

If the OP is looking for reliability, fun and creature comforts then the right spec will be a great replacement. Plus on safety over the 5 GTI its an upgrade.

The dp will cause some smoke but only when you floor it and only for a short bit. The dp will also give it a really nice sound.

Nice specs toook for imo: HK sound or ateast the HiFi audio upgrade. The extended cluster. LED lights. Split rear seats with pass through. High beams assist. Nav. If you wana have the M perf styling bits on (front lip, dual slat kidney grilles, boot spoiler, side skirt vinyl and extentions) try find one with it on already and save yourself a lot of money. M Sport auto box.

I get 1100km on the tank open road. 7.9 max town driving.
