Motorplan Q's

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum:) Just a few questions that I'm sure you fundi's will be able to help me with. Just bought an E46 M3 of which its motorplan ends in September this year. Called BMW and asked for an extension option and they advised me that for one year or 20000km, the cost will be roughly R34k:mmm: Was quite taken back by this! Is it advisable to go through with the Motorplan option? Are there cheaper and as effective alternatives? How troublesome are these cars generally? Apologies if this has been covered before:)

Howdy man.

That really depends on what the car has had done already.

Further is it a manual or SMG gearbox...

You are lucky its only 34k, some of the E60 M5's will charge you like 80k for the same...

Can you give us some major points that were covered under the motorplan in the past ? You should be able to ask any BMW dealer for the history...

The current mileage and age of the vehicle plays a major part in the price - not to mention items which were already covered!!

it also depends if you are just extending it by 1 year or 1 year & mileage. My moms car, we extended it by 1 year as there is no way she will do 30 000Km in the year. It only cost us R3500.

I just extended my Motor plan.

I did not extend the km's , only the time... and it cost me R6k for 1 year.

its the Kilo's that are expensive.. i think about R1.60 per KM.

Well guys, the vehicle only has 94'5ookm on the clock, very well maintained with full service history. Besides its general services and other wear and tear issues like brake pads, etc...it seems as if nothing major was done. The vehicle is a 6 speed manual. Thanks again:thumb:

Soooo Im pretty much stuck between a rock and a hard place...Do I spend 30 odd thousand and have piece of mind for a year (....the gamble is nothing may happen) or do I opt for a warranty plan with Motorite or a MotorXtender Plan with Hollard??? Help...

If it was me. I would take that R35k & put it into a savings account thats gona earn interest, and then incase something major goes wrong you have some backup money. Cause spending R35k on motorplan for 1 year is insane, and what if nothing goes wrong? then you have wasted R35K.

seems it all depends really.

when I got my car it also came with a 1yr/100000km extension, and it cost R5500. The car was on 84K

According to a BMW dealer that I spoke to 2 weeks ago, u can't extend by time only anymore.
You have to extend time and mileage.
Is this correct?

Well...

To be honest, the aftermarket policy's are crap, and really not worth the paper its written on..

Your major risk there is the automatic or SMG gearbox, which you do not have, so I will make friends with a part supplier, and do some research...

Make sure your car is looked after properly, watch the temp gauge like a phyco... and you should be fine, I would do as Andrew says...

NO. We just did my moms car for an extra year & no extra mileage last week

Was +- R3000

I agree with the views above but on the other hand ... if you intend keeping the car for a while and you have the moola for the MP extention then go for it. Just be sure to use it in this year to fix any and everything that you can. So that by the time the MP expires you will have a new clutch, gearbox, etc. A practically new car for only R35k :mmm:

Saving the R35k would probably be best but will require discipline, which I think very few of us have:nono:

I am in the Same Scenario, My car has 94,000km and I will not extend the motor plan. BMW motor plan is a Rip off. There are so many good BMW mechanics that have opened their own work shop and do just as good work for much less. Plus for R16,000 I can put it on the bank and wait till something happens to the car. it cost between 16,000 to 30,000 rand for the extention so no thank you.

When did you have this done? I wanted to replace mine just before I sold the car because the coating was coming off around the edges and I was told that it is only replaced under warranty in the first 2 years - same story from both SMG and Forsdicks!!

Thanks for all your views gents:thumbsup: Still have up until October to decide so I will be busy doing research til then. So knowing that my motorplan ends in September this year, how do I best take advantage of it til then??? The car is obviously heading towards 100k, so can I not book my car in before that time to get a service done or do I have to wait for the OBC to alert me?? It would be a great pleasure if I could use every last dime of my motorplan before it expires:) Especially to replace the clutch.
