Hi, Im new to the forum. I own a 2004 330iM with the motorplan that will expire in April this year. I have been told that I cannot extend it any further. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding who would be able to offer me a good extended warranty for my car? Thx

I'm also interested in this as well. I contacted SA Warranties and they will get back to me later on today. I've got a 2005 E90 320i. So I'll let you guys know what the costs will be for a plan involving a warranty only. Don't care much for a service plan, but the big one is the warranty or maintenance plan.

Thanks, I will check these out. I have some quotes already and just getting more to compare. They all don't seem too grand though. Their fine print is a bit of a concern.

Is that motorplan with BMW or 3rd party?

Hi Bayn46, the sites listed are all 3rd party warranties. NOT from BMW SA.

Hi, what I have is the motorplan currently with BMW. Unfortunately they dont offer and motorplan after you extend once. I just spoke to the lady that did my finance at BMW with BMW finance and she mentioned that they offer a warranty as well. I'm going to BMW to see her tomorrow. I think its with SA warranty though but will see what she offers since it is someone at the dealership that is offering it.

Do one final claim under MP for anything and everything that looks suspect. Then put your money in the bank for any emergency repairs. Unless you have a Friday car, you should be better off that way.

I have been driving without MP for more than 5 years now. But then you need to build up your unforeseen expenses fund for the bad days. If you can put away a monthly payment you should have a whole lot of cash to perform repairs and maintenance with. Call it your car fund.
But you also need a maintenance plan - know when what is due for replacement etc.
Another word of advise when going down that route - try to stay away from expensive parts - rather try a scrap yard first for example. It's a bit more of a pain, but savings are immense.

Example 1 - Tail light broken. Pre-facelift e46. Orange flicker lens at the top. Got one for R700 @ Beemows. BMW price - R2400.

Example 2 - Passanger door actuator packed up. BMW price R900. Bemow R350.

Example3 - Jan 2011 - BMW dealership quoted me R1200 for a universal coupling on the propshaft for my 2000 323i. I got it for R300. There are excelent mechanic's out there that are reasonably priced.

imo BMW inflates spares prices to force owners to buy a new BMW. And they are not the only manufacturer to do so. If you can afford it - good for you and congratulations on your brand new car. Most of us can't and will just fix her up.

Please explain what concerns you have about the fine print. I'm trying to learn as much as I can, so your input on this would be most appreciated.

Hi Guys, I'm also new to the forum, have any of you taken out an extended warranty and with which company that is reliable and trustworthy?

What should I look out for in the fine print. Have a 2009 335i less than 100 000km.

Also from my experience the after market warranties don't cover consequential damage, I experienced this. This is why I would never touch them....perhaps someone who has bought one can confirm.

Guys seriously. I wouldnt even bother with a warranty on an e90. Maybe on 335i but otherwise they rarely give trouble. I took a 320d to 200k km and did not have to claim anything.
I wanted to claim a vaccuum pump but sa warranties did not cover something "modern" like that. It got right again on its own anyhow though.

I've had one on my 325ci and it saved me cash and the hassles of trying to source parts cheaper. They all work about the same. They DONT cover wear and tear items and as the post above says they don't cover consequential damage (and that sucks!). But basically if something breaks and that causes something else to F--up they will only pay for the 1st thing that broke! Bull, but it is what it is.
It also pays to speak with you mechanic and they way he reports the damages etc. If it sounds like a wear and tear they won't pay. if it sounds more like a failure of a part, they are more likely to pay.
Its insurance and will never be as good as Motorplan, but it helps me sleep a little easier at night knowing if my gear box packs up I dont have a R30k bill to deal with.
I got the one through BMW, SA warranties I think it is.
You can also double up the cover etc depending on age and mileage of car.

This is a tough one to call. Mechanical insurance can:
  • cost you a lot of money if nothing goes wrong
  • save your behind when something big goes wrong
  • drive up your blood pressure when you find out the thing that broke is excluded from your policy
  • drive you nuts when the insurer sends you to a dodgy shop on the other side of town who don't know a BMW from a BAW

My advice would be to put something away every month for when (not if) your 330i breaks. By this time the usual suspects (suspension bushes, cooling system, window regulators e.a.) has probably made themselves known so the worst might be behind you. For a while anyway - my E39 is on radiator number three.

Hahahaha, perfect! I agree 100% with you! Its a personal choice and for the upfront outlay it gives me a bit of piece of mind, so thats way I use them and on the 335 stuff ain't cheap. But 330i is a different story?
If you get the warranty you wont need it, and if you don't you will need. Murphy is bugger.
